Using Prenucleation Aggregation of Caffeine-Benzoic Acid as a Rapid Indication of Co-crystallization from Solutions

Yichun Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between prenucleation aggregation in solution and co-crystal formation in the caffeine-benzoic acid co-crystal system. It suggests that NMR spectroscopy can be used to predict co-crystallization from specific solvents and screen suitable solvents for manufacturing and scale-up. The results show that crystallization from methanol does not result in co-crystal formation, while acetone and acetonitrile lead to the formation of co-crystal along with caffeine.

Formation mechanism of surfactant-free microemulsion and a judgment on whether it can be formed in one ternary system

Ying Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation and stability mechanism of surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME). The results showed that the dynamic equilibrium of conservative, dissipative, and random forces promote the formation of SFME. Directional arrangement and charge redistribution of ethanol molecules at the interface layer contribute to the stability of SFME. A novel parameter λ was defined to represent the interaction between amphi-solvent, oil, and water, and its relationship with the proportion of single-phase area (S) was established.

Aqueous solubility of high concentrated caffeine using hydrotrope and the application to the anti-cellulite cosmetics

Su In Park et al.

Summary: This study presents measurements of the solubility of caffeine in water at different temperatures and demonstrates the increased solubility achieved by using a hydrotropic solubilization system. The results indicate the feasibility of preparing high-concentration aqueous caffeine solutions under specific conditions. The application of the modified Apelblat equation successfully predicts the temperature dependence of caffeine solubility in aqueous solutions containing niacinamide. These findings provide valuable basic data for the development of anti-cellulite cosmetics.

The ability of trimethylamine N-oxide to resist pressure induced perturbations to water structure

Harrison Laurent et al.

Summary: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) protects organisms from high pressure damage. Both TMAO and pressure affect water structure at the molecular level, but their combined action is not well understood. In this study, neutron scattering and computational modeling were used to investigate the influence of TMAO on water structure under 4 kbar pressure. The results show that TMAO can counteract the pressure-induced perturbation of water structure, particularly in maintaining a clear second solvation shell, enhancing hydrogen bonding between water molecules, and forming strong TMAO-water hydrogen bonds. An 'osmolyte protection' ratio at which pressure and TMAO-induced energy changes cancel out was calculated. Remarkably, this ratio also matches the concentration dependence of TMAO in organism muscle tissue as a function of depth. Therefore, osmolyte protection may provide a molecular mechanism for the survival of life in extreme environments.

Bridging Structure, Dynamics, and Thermodynamics: An Example Study on Aqueous Potassium Halides

Harrison Laurent et al.

Summary: The study deconstructs ion-specific perturbations to water structure and dynamics in aqueous systems using neutron scattering, NMR, and computational modeling, shedding light on the origins of bulk thermodynamic properties. The research finds that ions induce mostly local perturbations to water structure and dynamics, with the enthalpy of hydration being influenced by the ions' charge density.
