Particle scale study of heat transfer in the fluidized bed combustion process

Jun Xie et al.

Summary: The CFD-DEM approach coupled with thermochemical submodels is used to study the heat transfer characteristics during solid fuel combustion in a bubbling fluidized bed. The model considers particle flow behavior, gas turbulence, heat transfer between and within phases, and chemical reactions. The study verifies the model using experimental data and quantifies the contributions of different heat transfer modes at a particle scale. It also explores the formation and development of hot spots and analyzes the influence of different particle properties on heat transfer modes.

Effective thermal conductivity simulations of suspensions containing non-spherical particles in shear flow

Q. Shu et al.

Summary: In this study, three methods were coupled to simulate the thermal conductivity of suspensions of oblate spheroid particles under shear flow conditions. The results showed that the effective thermal conductivity of the suspension saturates when the thermal conductivity of the particles exceeds 20-30 W/(mK) in stagnant state. Additionally, the rotating state of the oblate particles also affects the effective thermal conductivity, with log-rolling around the minor axis resulting in a higher conductivity compared to tumbling or the rotation of a spherical particle of equivalent volume fraction.
