Surface Stability and Morphology of Calcium Phosphate Tuned by pH Values and Lactic Acid Additives: Theoretical and Experimental Study

Hongwei Chen et al.

Summary: The mineralization of calcium phosphate can be controlled by the coordination number and strength of Ca2+ ions with different species and the solvent molecules. Oligomeric lactic acid was found to stabilize the pre-nucleation clusters and the brushite surface through intermolecular interactions. The morphology of the calcium phosphate precipitation can be tuned by adjusting the concentration of Ca2+ ions and the initial pH values.

Summary: This review compares noninfectious and infectious demineralization of bones and teeth, particularly focusing on the similarities and differences in the expression of hard tissue degradation for osteoporosis and dental caries. The findings suggest that the physiology of demineralization is similar for bones and teeth, but the presence of infection plays a unique role in dental caries.

Calcium Phosphate Nanoclusters for the Repair of Tooth Enamel Erosion

Chia-Hsien Wang et al.

Summary: The artificial repair of tooth enamel is a complex task, but using calcium phosphate nanoclusters (CaP NCs) for repair shows great potential, as it can increase the hardness of the repaired tooth enamel to a similar level as normal tooth enamel.

A remineralizing orthodontic etchant that utilizes calcium phosphate ion clusters

Hyeryeong Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the use of a phosphoric acid solution containing calcium phosphate ion clusters (CPICs) to minimize enamel damage during long-term bracket bonding. The results showed that the experimental etchant containing CPICs was able to demineralize the enamel while promoting remineralization, leading to improved surface roughness and microhardness.

Building an aprismatic enamel-like layer on a demineralized enamel surface by using carboxymethyl chitosan and lysozyme-encapsulated amorphous calcium phosphate nanogels

Jinhua Song et al.

Summary: This study aimed to prepare CMC/LYZ-ACP nanogels for controlled delivery of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to form an aprismatic enamel-like layer on demineralized enamel. The nanogels were negatively charged spherical structures with a particle size of approximately 300 nm, and at high concentrations of NaCl, ACP was dissociated from the nanogels and transformed into hydroxyapatite (HAP).

Summary: The study compared the enamel remineralization efficacy of a novel fluoridated bioactive glass toothpaste with a standard fluoride toothpaste. Results showed that the F-BG toothpaste outperformed the fluoride toothpaste in enhancing enamel surface micro-hardness, smoothness, and volume restoration.
