Insights from high-fidelity modeling of industrial rotary bell atomization

Robert I. Saye et al.

Summary: The global automotive industry sprayed over 2.6 billion liters of paint in 2018, primarily using electrostatic rotary bell atomization. This complex process involves the fluid mechanics of rapidly rotating thin films tearing apart into micrometer-thin filaments and droplets. Optimizing these processes can lead to improved energy efficiency, reduced material waste, and increased throughput.

Dimensional analysis of droplet size and ligament length during high-speed rotary bell atomization

Lutz Goedeke et al.

Summary: Modern spray-coating processes are based on high-volume, low-pressure, airless atomization or high-speed rotary bell atomization, often assisted by electrostatic charging to increase the transfer efficiency. The process from the liquid film flow beneath the bell, through ligament formation and consecutive disintegration to droplet deposition, has been constantly explored during the evolution of automotive spray coating. This work proposes a set of dimensionless groups that fully describe the process from film flow to ligament disintegration, including shear and elongational flow effects during atomization of particle laden, shear thinning, viscoelastic fluids.

On surface area coverage by an electrostatic rotating bell atomizer

K. Sidawi et al.

Summary: The experimental study focused on the effects of rotational speed of the bell-cup, paint flow rate, and shaping air flow rate on droplet size and surface coverage. The results showed that increasing rotational speed reduced droplet diameter but had little effect on coverage, while increasing paint flow rate and shaping air flow rate significantly increased surface coverage. The application of an electrostatic potential slightly enhanced surface coverage.

Electrohydrodynamic drying of foods: Principle, applications, and prospects

T. Anukiruthika et al.

Summary: Electrohydrodynamic drying (EHD) is a promising emerging drying technology that consumes less energy and produces foods with acceptable sensory quality. Despite its potential for industrial-scale applications, the underlying drying mechanism is not well established. Research interest in EHD of foods has been vast, but limited commercial applications have been reported.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical performance evaluation of an electrostatic rotary bell sprayer with a focus on droplet charge, electric field, and ambient conditions. The simulation shows that different parametric values for droplet charging and electric field coupling significantly impact the atomized droplet distribution and deposition rate.

Bell-cup serrations and their effect on atomization in electrostatic rotating bell atomizers

K. Sidawi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the atomization mechanism of an Electrostatic Rotating Bell atomizer, focusing on the impact of serrations at the bell-cup's edge on fluid behaviour. Results showed that serrated edges caused the fluid to be ejected as thin ligaments, while non-serrated edges resulted in sheet-like ejection. The SMD decreased with increasing angular frequency of the bell-cup, and sprays generated by different bell-cups at various angular frequencies showed equal performance when plotted against the stretching rate.
