Metabolic genes on conjugative plasmids are highly prevalent in Escherichia coli and can protect against antibiotic treatment

Alana Palomino et al.

Summary: Previous studies have focused on antibiotic resistance genes in conjugative plasmids, neglecting the metabolic genes. This study found a high abundance of metabolic genes on conjugative plasmids and their associations with known antibiotic resistance genes at the strain level. In vitro characterization confirmed the phenotypic impact of these metabolic genes on antibiotic susceptibility.

Limited and Strain-Specific Transcriptional and Growth Responses to Acquisition of a Multidrug Resistance Plasmid in Genetically Diverse Escherichia coli Lineages

Steven Dunn et al.

Summary: The study found that different E. coli strains vary in their ability to acquire and maintain MDR plasmids, with highly strain-specific transcriptional responses observed following plasmid acquisition. However, the subtle transcriptional responses consistent across all strains suggest that fitness costs arising from transcriptional disruption are unlikely to act as a barrier to dissemination of this MDR plasmid in E. coli.
