Fabrication and characterization of electrospun GelMA/PCL/CS nanofiber composites for wound dressing applications

Esra Pilavci et al.

Summary: In this study, a new polymer combination of Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA)/Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Chitosan (CS) was used to fabricate nanofiber composites for wound dressing applications. The influence of different ratios of GelMA concentration on the nanofiber structure and morphology was examined. The results showed that higher concentrations of GelMA led to improved mechanical strength, hydrophilic properties, and a slower degradation rate in the nanofiber composites. The composites also displayed antibacterial activity and supported high cell proliferation and adhesion in vitro. The 10 wt% GelMA-based nanofiber composites showed great potential for wound dressing applications.

Debittering of Grape Juice by Electrospun Nylon Nanofibrous Membranes: Impact of Filtration on Physicochemical, Functional, and Sensory Properties

Maria Stella Cosio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of electrospun nylon-6 nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) on the concentration of bitter compounds and antioxidants in grapefruit juices during dead-end filtration processes. The results show that NFMs selectively retain low molecular weight antioxidants at early filtration stages and remove bitter glycosylated phenolics at a variable ratio depending on membrane thickness. Filtration of fresh grapefruit juice using NFMs reduces flavanones associated with immediate bitterness and completely removes limonin, the compound responsible for persistent bitterness. NFMs have potential in selectively reducing bitter terpenoids and glycosylated flavonoids from grape juice in the production of beverages.

Chitosan Schiff base electrospun fabrication and molecular docking assessment for nonleaching antibacterial nanocomposite production

Eman AboBakr Ali et al.

Summary: New chitosan derivative nanofibers with antibacterial properties were successfully produced in this study. Two CS Schiff base derivatives (CS-APC and CS-2APC) were prepared by incorporating 4-amino antipyrine moiety in different ratios, and further modified to obtain CS-APCR and CS-2APCR. The chemical structure was confirmed using spectral analyses. Molecular docking evaluation showed that CS-APCR has good fitting in the active sites of three enzymes with docking score values of - 32.76, - 35.43, and - 30.12 kcal/mol, respectively. CS derivative nanofibers were obtained by blending CS-2APC and CS-2APCR with PVP, resulting in decreased fiber diameters compared to pure PVP. The CS derivatives and their nanofibers exhibited antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with CS-2APCR nanofibers showing stronger activity against E. coli strains than CS-2APC nanofibers.
