Oxidative stress and antioxidants in health and disease

Tugba Raika Kiran et al.

Summary: An increase in the formation of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species, whether endogenous or exogenous, leads to oxidative stress and cellular damage. Antioxidants act as a defense system, protecting biomolecules and the organism from the harmful effects of free radicals and repairing damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidative stress is closely linked to the pathology of various diseases.

Antioxidant Activity of Diatomic Phenols

I. F. Rusina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant activity of nine compounds, including catecholamine compounds with 3,4-hydroxyphenyl as a common structural fragment. The study found that these compounds possess antioxidant properties in hydrocarbon substrate oxidation reactions. The chemiluminescent method was used to determine the antiradical activity by intercepting peroxyl radicals. The presence of two active hydroxy groups in diatomic phenol compounds weakens the O-H bond and leads to a high rate constant of hydrogen abstraction, which contributes to the inhibitory activity of antioxidants in oxidation processes.

Summary: Living species are constantly exposed to oxidants, leading to oxidative stress and disease. The induction of oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between radical species and antioxidant defense systems, which can damage cellular biomolecules.

Antioxidative Stress Mechanisms behind Resveratrol: A Multidimensional Analysis

Tongyu Gu et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, oxidative stress has been identified as a key factor in various diseases, leading to increased attention on antioxidants worldwide for their potential benefits in disease prevention. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol found in plants like grapes and strawberries, is known for its antioxidative properties and potential pharmacological effects such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and antioxidant effects.

Signaling Role of Mitochondrial Enzymes and Ultrastructure in the Formation of Molecular Mechanisms of Adaptation to Hypoxia

Ludmila Lukyanova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dependence of mitochondrial enzyme response and ultrastructure in the rat cerebral cortex on the severity and duration of in vivo hypoxic exposures. The study also revealed the role of individual animal's resistance to hypoxia and differences in response based on resistance levels.
