Malassezia pachydermatis from brown bear: A comprehensive analysis reveals novel genotypes and distribution of all detected variants in domestic and wild animals

Suzana Hadina et al.

Summary: In this study, 80 yeast isolates recovered from 42 brown bears were identified as Malassezia pachydermatis using a culture-based approach and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Four distinct genotypes of M. pachydermatis were identified, with one genotype specifically adapted to brown bears and three genotypes discovered for the first time in bears. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry showed great potential in detecting subtle differences between these genotypes and revealed distinct spectral profiles of bear-specific genotypes.

Hsiao-Lin Chien et al.

Summary: This study isolated two elite fungal strains for the degradation of PBSA films and found that Aspergillus terreus HC showed better degradation ability. The addition of elite fungal mycelia improved the degradation ability of soil, and PBSA induced the synthesis of lipolytic enzymes to degrade substrates in soil. Furthermore, PBSA residues or fungal mycelia had no adverse effect on plant growth.

Biodegradation study of Polyethylene and PVC using naturally occurring plastic degrading microbes

Saira Saeed et al.

Summary: The increasing plastic waste is a serious man-made concern. In this study, degradation of PVC and polyethylene-derived synthetic polymers was carried out using bacteria and fungi isolated from the plastic waste environment. The results showed that certain bacterial and fungal strains were successful in degrading the polymers, providing a scientific justification for their potential use in plastic bioremediation.

Fungal Enzymes Involved in Plastics Biodegradation

Marta Elisabetta Eleonora Temporiti et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a growing environmental problem that cannot be solved completely by recycling. Thus, research has focused on using fungal enzymes to degrade plastic. Fungal laccases, peroxidases, and esterases have shown promising results in degrading different types of plastics, and these enzymes have demonstrated remarkable efficiency under laboratory conditions.

Summary: Plastic has become an essential basic need for daily life worldwide, with global production exceeding 300 million tons annually. The slow degradation rate of plastics leads to a massive accumulation of plastic waste in nature. It is essential to develop effective plastic biodegradation processes to address the issue of plastic waste.

Summary: This study aims to restore carbapenem effectiveness against carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella (CRK) using celastrol and thymol. Celastrol showed significant inhibitory effect against carbapenemase-hydrolytic activity. The combination of celastrol and thymol decreased the resistance of CRK to meropenem and increased cell wall-permeability of CRK.

Microbial Degradation of Plastics and Approaches to Make It More Efficient

I. B. Kotova et al.

Summary: The growing production of synthetic plastics worldwide leads to increased plastic pollution, and research has shown that microbial degradation of plastics is slow but possible. Most studies focus on microbial degradation of polyethylene, polystyrene, and PET, with the most efficient process currently being the PET degradation by recombinant hydrolases from thermophilic actinobacteria. Various methods to accelerate microbial plastic degradation are also discussed.

Summary: In this study, the hydrolysis of PET by two different enzymes, NEP and CLE, was investigated. It was found that NEP utilizes the MH mechanism as energetically most favorable, while CLE catalyzes the reaction with a higher barrier. These findings suggest that metal-based catalysts may be more effective for PET degradation.
