Mitochondrial alternative oxidase enhanced ABA-mediated drought tolerance in Solanum lycopersicum

Kang Qiao et al.

Summary: The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) and mitochondrial alternative oxidase (AOX) both contribute to drought stress responses in tomato. ABA regulates alternative respiration and increasing AOX enhances drought tolerance by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. The transcription factor SlAREB1 directly activates the transcription of AOX1a and its silencing compromises ABA-induced alternative respiration, leading to decreased resistance to drought stress. These findings provide new insights into the role of AOX in ABA-mediated drought tolerance.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the regulation of cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels in response to exogenous abscisic acid and calcium treatment under drought stress in tomato

Jinyan Shi et al.

Summary: Drought stress limits the growth and yield of tomato seedlings. Exogenous ABA and Ca2+ can alleviate the damage caused by drought stress. In this study, the transcriptome characteristics of tomato treated with exogenous ABA and Ca2+ under drought stress were analyzed, and the role of SlCNGC genes in tomato drought resistance pathway and their regulation by exogenous ABA and Ca2+ were predicted.

Response of yield and quality of greenhouse tomatoes to water and salt stresses and biochar addition in Northwest China

Zhuqing Wu et al.

Summary: Improving productivity of saline soils under drought condition is critical for sustainable agricultural development in arid areas. This study examined the effects of water, salinity, and biochar addition on tomato yield and quality, and found that biochar addition reduced yield and irrigation water productivity while increasing certain quality parameters. Lower irrigation levels and higher salinity generally led to higher yield and irrigation water productivity.
