Disparities in cause-specific mortality by race and sex among bladder cancer patients from the SEER database

Timothy D. D. Shu et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that bladder cancer patients are more likely to die from causes other than the primary malignancy. This study aimed to examine the impact of race and sex on cause-specific mortality for bladder cancer patients.

Physical activity, obesity, and bladder cancer incidence

Sicha Chantaprasopsuk et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers found that body mass index (BMI) and sitting time were associated with the risk of bladder cancer, while moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity could lower the risk. These findings highlight the importance of lifestyle factors in cancer prevention.

Nessn Azawi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of Uromonitor in NMIBC surveillance and its potential to reduce the number of cystoscopies. The results showed that Uromonitor has high sensitivity and specificity in detecting NMIBC recurrence, and has the potential to decrease the frequency of cystoscopies.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

Bladder Cancer and Risk Factors: Data from a Multi-Institutional Long-Term Analysis on Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer Incidence

Biagio Barone et al.

Summary: Bladder cancer (BCa) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) have common risk factors and may share a biological pathway. A retrospective study showed a positive association between CVD and BCa incidence, with CVD being an independent protective factor for BCa. However, this effect was not confirmed for high-risk tumors.

Urinary biomarkers for bladder cancer diagnosis and NMIBC follow-up: a systematic review

Yanish Soorojebally et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the clinical validity and utility of eleven urinary biomarkers for bladder cancer diagnosis and NMIBC follow-up. The results suggested that urinary biomarkers may have a complementary role in bladder cancer diagnosis and NMIBC surveillance, but further confirmation of their clinical benefit is needed.

Summary: The updated EAU guidelines provide new information on the diagnosis and treatment of NMIBC for clinical practice. Individual risk assessment is crucial in determining the appropriate treatment for patients with different risk levels. Surgical intervention, including radical cystectomy, may be necessary for cases unresponsive to BCG treatment or with high risk of progression.

The Development of Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tools in Bladder Cancer

Alison Schulz et al.

Summary: Bladder cancer is a challenging disease with high recurrence rates, leading to invasive surveillance methods. Non-invasive urinary tests have gained attention for early detection and to reduce unnecessary procedures; however, there is a need for improved sensitivity and specificity. Recent advancements in technology and research offer novel detection systems and biomarkers that show promise in clinical practice.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Surveillance Intensity in Intermediate Risk, Nonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer: Revisiting the Optimal Timing and Frequency of Cystoscopy

Abhishek Bhat et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the optimal cystoscopic interval for intermediate risk, nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer. Results showed that moderate intensity (6-month) surveillance intervals in this patient population allow for timely detection without compromising oncological outcomes, and are less costly with fewer cystoscopies compared to high intensity (3-month) intervals.
