Widely targeted secondary metabolomics explored pomegranate aril browning during cold storage

Jiangli Shi et al.

Summary: This study compared the aril traits and secondary metabolites of healthy and browning pomegranate arils using metabolomics. It was found that aril browning was mainly caused by water loss, the oxidation of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and hydrolysis reaction. The presence of p-coumaric acid was also found to greatly affect pomegranate aril browning.

Methyl salicylate treatment alleviates peel spotting of 'Sucrier' banana by improving mitochondrial physiological properties and functions

Sirawich Chotikakham et al.

Summary: The treatment of methyl salicylate (MeSA) can preserve the properties and functions of mitochondria in 'Sucrier' banana, delaying the onset of senescence and peel spotting. This is achieved by enhancing the antioxidant defense mechanisms of mitochondria, reducing reactive oxygen species production, increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c content, and ATP levels.

A Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals the Molecular Mechanisms That Underlie Somatic Embryogenesis in Peaonia ostii 'Fengdan'

Huiting Ci et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient regeneration system using somatic embryogenesis (SE) was established for tree peony. Transcriptome analysis revealed the regulatory mechanisms underlying SE in tree peony, including hormone signal transduction, stress response, and epigenetic modifications. The identified molecular markers will benefit the propagation and genetic engineering of tree peony.

The MADS-domain factor AGAMOUS-Like18 promotes somatic embryogenesis

Priyanka Paul et al.

Summary: The MADS-factor AGAMOUS-Like18 (AGL18) physically and genetically interacts with AGL15 to promote somatic embryogenesis. They have redundant functions in developmental processes such as somatic embryogenesis, and interact in a complex regulatory loop. Phosphorylation of AGL18 and AGL15 is crucial for the promotion of somatic embryogenesis.

Seed development in Paeonia ostii (Paeoniaceae), with particular reference to embryogeny

Keliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Seeds of Paeonia ostii have the potential to be used as a source of edible oil, but the lack of information about the developmental biology of the seeds has hindered their utilization. This study investigated the development of seed coat, endosperm, and embryo of P. ostii, finding that the seed coat acts as a temporary storage tissue and the embryo development goes through two stages. This pattern of embryogenesis differs from other angiosperms and resembles that of gymnosperms.

An Essential Function for Auxin in Embryo Development

Subodh Verma et al.

Summary: Embryogenesis in seed plants is a complex process involving cell divisions and fate determinations, with auxin playing a crucial role in pattern formation. Auxin controls organ positioning and development in the embryo through its distribution. Biological tools for studying auxin function in embryo development are discussed as they may be of interest.

Current Proteomic and Metabolomic Knowledge of Zygotic and Somatic Embryogenesis in Plants

Janet Juarez-Escobar et al.

Summary: Embryogenesis is a crucial developmental program in plants, with research gaps in understanding the mechanisms regulating somatic embryogenesis (SE) and zygotic embryogenesis (ZE). Studies on ZE are limited, while SE research efforts are substantial but disjointed, potentially hindering efficient large-scale plant regeneration. Comprehensive and integrative studies of both SE and ZE are needed to address these challenges and provide a molecular foundation for plant embryogenesis.

Transcriptomic Time-Series Analyses of Gene Expression Profile During Zygotic Embryo Development in Picea mongolica

Jia Yan et al.

Summary: Transcriptomic analysis of zygotic embryos in Picea mongolica revealed transcripts related to embryogenic competence, cell division pattern, hormones, and stress response genes. Auxin is crucial for early embryo patterning and pre-cotyledon embryonic formation, while ABA regulates embryo maturation. Methylation-related gene expression is associated with activation of early-stage embryos, late embryogenesis abundant proteins, and storage/energy-related genes in late and mature embryos. Network analysis identified stage-specific and multistage gene expression clusters during embryogenesis, with WOX, MYB, AP2, and HLH transcription factors playing a role in different stages of embryogenesis. This study provides valuable transcriptome data for embryo development in P. mongolica, benefiting the protection and utilization of its genetic resources.
