Corticosteroids in ARDS

Emmanuelle Kuperminc et al.

Summary: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is commonly associated with sepsis, and both conditions involve excessive inflammation. Corticosteroids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties, are used in the treatment of septic shock and oxygen-dependent SARS-CoV-2 related acute respiratory failure. Recent studies have shown that corticosteroids can also reduce mortality in severe community-acquired pneumonia, indicating a potential role in the treatment of ARDS.

The Prolyl Oligopeptidase Inhibitor KYP-2047 Is Cytoprotective and Anti-Inflammatory in Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells with Defective Proteasomal Clearance

Summary: Increased oxidative stress, dysfunctional cellular clearance, and chronic inflammation are associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Inhibition of PROLY-OLIGOPEPTIDASE (PREP) by KYP-2047 has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, and clear cellular protein aggregates.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome 2022 1 Acute respiratory distress syndrome: causes, pathophysiology, and phenotypes

Lieuwe D. J. Bos et al.

Summary: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common clinical syndrome of acute respiratory failure caused by diffuse lung inflammation and edema. The pathophysiology of ARDS is complex and involves multiple overlapping and interacting pathways of injury, inflammation, and coagulation. Mechanical ventilation can contribute to lung injury and inflammation. Resolution of inflammation requires coordinated downregulation of proinflammatory pathways and upregulation of anti-inflammatory pathways.

Summary: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common critical illness in respiratory care units. Despite many treatment methods, the mortality rate of ARDS remains high. Nanomedicine, as a new field of research, shows promise in the treatment of ARDS.

Summary: ALI and ARDS are common life-threatening lung diseases with high mortality rates, but there is still a lack of effective pharmacological therapies. Developing new drugs for therapy of ALI/ARDS is in great demand, as natural compounds have shown potential therapeutic effects and may also be helpful for treatment of COVID-19.

ACE2, the Counter-Regulatory Renin-Angiotensin System Axis and COVID-19 Severity

Filippos Triposkiadis et al.

Summary: ACE2 acts as the entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2 and can convert harmful substances to protective ones, suggesting that upregulation of ACE2 may be beneficial in mitigating COVID-19 risks. Limited involvement of ACE2 in the lung counter-regulatory RAS axis, increasing ACE2 expression may predispose to more severe disease, particularly in the presence of relevant risk factors.
