First pilot case-control interventional study using autologous extracellular vesicles to treat chronic venous ulcers unresponsive to conventional treatments

Lorenzo Gibello et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of autologous serum-derived extracellular vesicles (s-EVs) in promoting the healing process of chronic venous ulcers (CVUs). The results showed that s-EVs treatment could accelerate tissue regeneration, reduce ulcer size, and alleviate inflammation in CVUs patients. The findings suggest that s-EVs hold clinical potential for the treatment of CVUs.

Extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells - a novel therapeutic tool in infectious diseases

Tasaduq Manzoor et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived nano-sized lipid-bilayer encapsulated vesicles released into the surrounding space, playing an important role in intercellular communication. In treating infectious diseases, mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs (MSC-EVs) have shown therapeutic value by eliminating pathogens, modulating resistance, and repairing tissue damage. This is achieved by producing antimicrobial substances, inhibiting pathogen multiplication, and activating macrophage phagocytic activity. EVs also play a key role in infectious pathogenesis and hold great promise for innovative treatments.

The conditioned medium from mesenchymal stromal cells pretreated with proinflammatory cytokines promote fibroblasts migration and activation

Chenyang Liu et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) promote wound healing and cell growth through paracrine cytokine signaling. Conditioned medium of MSCs pretreated with IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha (IT MSC-CM) showed better effects on promoting cell migration, proliferation, and activation in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) compared to normal MSC-CM.

A Comparative Study of Canine Mesenchymal Stem Cells Isolated from Different Sources

Filip Humenik et al.

Summary: This study compares the differences in morphology, phenotype, multilineage potential, and proliferation capacity of canine MSCs isolated from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and amniotic tissue. The results show variations in these characteristics among the MSCs from different sources, and suggest considerations for isolation, expansion, and phenotyping of these cells prior to their application in regenerative veterinary medicine.

Role and Function of Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Fibroblast in Cutaneous Wound Healing

Kotaro Tanaka et al.

Summary: Skin wounds usually heal on their own, but this is only true for healthy individuals. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been found to play a significant role in wound healing and regeneration, with their ability to self-renew and differentiate, as well as their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. This review aims to explain the functions and effects of MSCs in wound healing.

Summary: This study reveals the critical role of Thy-1 in wound healing, particularly in vascular dynamics. Silencing of the Thy-1 gene retards the wound healing process and Thy-1 knockout mice show lower blood perfusion in the wound area.

Identifying the key genes regulating mesenchymal stem cells chondrogenic differentiation: an in vitro study

Tongzhou Liang et al.

Summary: This study identified key genes involved in the chondrogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and found that their expression patterns varied at different time points. In addition, protein-protein interaction analysis revealed crucial hub genes and transcription factors that play important roles in the process and mechanism of MSCs chondrogenesis.

Differential Therapeutic Effect of Extracellular Vesicles Derived by Bone Marrow and Adipose Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Wound Healing of Diabetic Ulcers and Correlation to Their Cargoes

Margherita Pomatto et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that EVs derived from adipose tissue have a positive impact on diabetic wound healing, while those from bone marrow primarily promote cell proliferation. Significant differences exist in the molecular cargo of these two types of EVs, with ADSC-EVs showing greater angiogenic effects, and BMSC-EVs being more inclined towards cellular proliferation.

The Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Regenerative Medicine: Current Knowledge and Future Understandings

Makram Merimi et al.

Summary: Research on the therapeutic potential of progenitor cells, particularly mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), has significantly advanced in recent decades. MSCs have shown promise in regenerative medicine due to their ability to support tissue repair and regeneration through various therapeutic functions. The fate and behavior of MSCs are regulated by their microenvironment, and their therapeutic effects may be achieved through a paracrine pathway involving the release of various messengers.

Summary: The study focused on developing a cell-free hydrogel dressing loaded with MSC-conditioned media to improve healing of hard-to-heal wounds in diabetic patients. MSC-CM rescued impaired functions of hyperglycemic fibroblasts and promoted their proliferative activity when loaded in GelMA-PEGDA hydrogels, suggesting a potential application in healing diabetic or chronic wounds.
