Arginase 1 expression is increased during hepatic stellate cell activation and facilitates collagen synthesis

Mengfan Zhang et al.

Summary: Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC) plays a crucial role in liver fibrosis. During HSC activation, there is a switch from nitric oxide synthase (NOS) to arginase-1 (Arg1) in arginine catabolism. Inhibiting Arg1 can effectively suppress collagen production, suggesting that Arg1 may be a potential therapeutic target for liver fibrogenesis.

Oral microbiota and liver diseases

Maged Tharwat Elghannam et al.

Summary: Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in liver diseases, with oral microbiota dysbiosis contributing to their occurrence and progression. The human microbiome has potential diagnostic value and provides a novel strategy for targeted therapy in liver cancer. The restoration of beneficial organisms and correction of dysbiosis may improve outcomes in liver disorders, including MAFLD and other liver diseases.

Salivary Proteomics Reveals Significant Changes in Relation to Alzheimer's Disease and Aging

Cristina Contini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the salivary proteome to discover biomarkers for aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The proteomic data of healthy controls and AD patients were analyzed using multiple statistical approaches. The results showed significant decrease of proteins/peptides related to aging in elderly subjects, and AD patients exhibited higher levels of certain proteins. Correlation tests and random forest analysis allowed for classification of subjects based on age and health status. The findings suggest the potential of saliva as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for AD and aging-related pathologies.

Oral Microbiome Characteristics in Patients With Autoimmune Hepatitis

Benchen Rao et al.

Summary: This study characterized the oral microbiome in AIH patients for the first time, established an effective diagnostic model, and validated microbial markers for AIH across regions. Significant differences were found in the oral microbiome of AIH patients compared to healthy controls, with certain genera enriched in AIH group. By using a random forest model, 5 optimal microbial markers were identified with high differentiating potential, demonstrating the potential of oral microbiota-targeted biomarkers as noninvasive diagnostic tools for AIH.
