The global epidemiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): a systematic review

Zobair M. Younossi et al.

Summary: A comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted to assess the global and regional prevalence, incidence, and mortality of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed that the global prevalence of NAFLD is 30% and increasing, highlighting the need for urgent and comprehensive strategies to raise awareness and address NAFLD on local, regional, and global levels.

Global incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 63 studies and 1,201,807 persons

Michael H. Le et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the global incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies. The results showed that the incidence rate of NAFLD among 1,201,807 individuals at risk was 4,612.8 per 100,000 person-years. Males and overweight/obese individuals had significantly higher incidence rates compared to females and those of normal weight.

Alterations in Gut Microbiome in Cirrhosis as Assessed by Quantitative Metagenomics: Relationship With Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure and Prognosis

Cristina Sole et al.

Summary: Patients with cirrhosis exhibit significant alterations in gut microbiome, particularly pronounced in those with ACLF, correlated with disease stages and complications, and predictive of survival. These findings suggest a potential role of gut microbiome in disease progression and prognosis, warranting further validation in future studies.

Novel Fecal Biomarkers That Precede Clinical Diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis

Heather J. Galipeau et al.

Summary: Increased fecal proteolytic activity was found before the clinical diagnosis of UC, which may serve as a noninvasive biomarker of inflammation associated with changes in gut microbiota. The study suggests potential therapeutic targets for at-risk populations based on antiprotease treatments.

Adlercreutzia hattorii sp. nov., an equol non- producing bacterium isolated from human faeces

Mitsuo Sakamoto et al.

Summary: Two obligately anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from fecal samples of healthy humans in Japan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that these strains belonged to the genus Adlercreutzia and possessed equol-producing capabilities. The strains were named Adlercreutzia hattorii sp. nov. and A. equolifaciens. Strain 8CFCBH1T was identified as a novel species, while strain 9CBH6 exhibited daidzein-converting activity.

Fecal Microbiota Transplant from Human to Mice Gives Insights into the Role of the Gut Microbiota in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Sebastian D. Burz et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the composition of gut microbiota plays a key role in the development of NAFLD, with mice transplanted with microbiota from a patient with fatty liver showing a higher susceptibility to obesity and steatosis compared to those transplanted with healthy microbiota. Metabolomic analyses revealed significant metabolic differences between mice with different microbiota compositions.

Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells Shape a Transmissible Gut Microbiota That Protects From Metabolic Diseases

Emelyne Lecuyer et al.

Summary: Research shows that excess chronic contact between microbial motifs and intestinal immune cells is related to diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Transgenic mice with enhanced DC lifespan and immunogenicity show resistance to high-fat diet and metabolic alterations. This resistance is associated with healthier intestinal barrier function and reduced intestinal inflammation.
