A novel antimicrobial peptide YS12 isolated from Bacillus velezensis CBSYS12 exerts anti-biofilm properties against drug-resistant bacteria

Suzia Aktar Suchi et al.

Summary: The abuse of antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of multi-drug-resistant bacteria. Antimicrobial peptides, known for their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, are being considered as alternative options to traditional antibiotics. In this study, the antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity of an antimicrobial peptide called YS12, derived from Bacillus velezensis CBSYS12, was evaluated. The results demonstrated that YS12 exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and effectively inhibited biofilm formation.

The first Brevinin-1 antimicrobial peptide with LPS-neutralizing and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in vivo

Maolin Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, a Brevinin-1 peptide named Brevinin-1GHd was identified from Hoplobatrachus rugulosus, which has potent antimicrobial activity and immune regulation. It can inhibit inflammation and significantly suppress acute edema development in mice, making it a promising novel therapeutic drug for infectious inflammation.

Membrane permeability and antimicrobial peptides: Much more than just making a hole

Juan C. C. Espeche et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a crucial role in fighting infections as part of the innate immunity. AMPs, which can be produced by various cells, have a wide spectrum of action against bacterial or fungal infections. In response to the increasing concern of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, AMPs have emerged as a promising alternative therapy due to their ability to inhibit growth and biofilm formation even in drug-resistant microorganisms. However, despite numerous patent filings related to AMPs, only a small portion has received certification from regulatory agencies. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of action of AMPs is essential for their certification, with the permeabilization of bacterial envelope being a key factor in most models.

Antimicrobial and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of MAF-1-Derived Antimicrobial Peptide Mt6 and Its D-Enantiomer D-Mt6 against Acinetobacter baumannii by Targeting Cell Membranes and Lipopolysaccharide Interaction

Delong Kong et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides Mt6 and D-Mt6 demonstrate broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, particularly against Acinetobacter baumannii, and exhibit strong antibacterial activity against biofilms. Furthermore, D-Mt6 shows better immunoregulatory activity in LPS-induced inflammation through LPS-neutralizing and suppressive effects on the MAPK signaling pathway. Therefore, D-Mt6 holds promise as a candidate drug against A. baumannii.

Antimicrobial Peptides and Copper(II) Ions: Novel Therapeutic Opportunities

Jasmin Portelinha et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising platform for developing novel classes of antibiotics to combat new pathogens and multidrug resistant bacteria. A subclass of AMPs known as ATCUN-AMPs utilize the inherent toxicity of copper ions for a synergistic effect against pathogens. Common structural features in ATCUN-AMPs and their molecular mechanisms are important areas of study for understanding their antimicrobial activity.

Membrane-disruptive peptides/peptidomimetics-based therapeutics: Promising systems to combat bacteria and cancer in the drug-resistant era

Liming Lin et al.

Summary: Membrane-disruptive peptides/peptidomimetics (MDPs) are antimicrobials or anticarcinogens that disrupt cell membranes, potentially serving as future therapeutics in the drug-resistant era. Experimental evidence suggests that MDPs can also be utilized as adjuvants to enhance the therapeutic effects of other agents.
