Daily injection of the β2 adrenergic agonist clenbuterol improved poor muscle growth and body composition in lambs following heat stress-induced intrauterine growth restriction

Rachel L. Gibbs et al.

Summary: This study found that stimulating beta 2 adrenergic activity can improve deficits in muscle growth and some metabolic parameters caused by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Although the deficit in beta 2 adrenergic receptor content was not recovered, IUGR muscles still responded to postnatal beta 2 adrenergic stimulation. Therefore, this may be an important approach to improve muscle growth and body composition in IUGR-born offspring.

Lower citrate synthase activity, mitochondrial complex expression, and fewer oxidative myofibers characterize skeletal muscle from growth-restricted fetal sheep

Jane Stremming et al.

Summary: There is evidence of reduced oxidative phosphorylation in skeletal muscle from sheep fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) due to intrinsic deficits in mitochondrial respiration. Mitochondrial respiration is similar in control and IUGR muscle fibers, but IUGR muscle has lower citrate synthase activity, lower protein expression of individual mitochondrial complex subunits, and lower expression of type I oxidative fibers.

Prenatal Oxygen and Glucose Therapy Normalizes Insulin Secretion and Action in Growth-Restricted Fetal Sheep

Leticia E. Camacho et al.

Summary: Placental insufficiency can lead to decreased oxygen and glucose concentrations in the fetus, resulting in fetal growth restriction. Current prenatal treatments do not address the simultaneous correction of oxygen and glucose supply. This study found that a 5-day correction of oxygen and glucose concentrations can normalize insulin secretion and glucose metabolism in fetuses with placental insufficiency-induced fetal growth restriction.

Regulation of glycolysis by the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF): implications for cellular physiology

S. J. Kierans et al.

Summary: Under hypoxic conditions, eukaryotic cells can shift metabolism towards glycolysis to maintain ATP levels, a process regulated by HIF-1 alpha. This metabolic switch is crucial for cellular survival during acute hypoxic stress and has implications for cancer cell survival and growth. Understanding the mechanisms central to this reprogramming is important for both physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Anemic hypoxemia reduces myoblast proliferation and muscle growth in late-gestation fetal sheep

Paul J. Rozance et al.

Summary: Fetal anemic hypoxemia was found to reduce muscle growth, leading to decreased muscle weight and fiber area, as well as reduced myoblast proliferation and differentiation. However, overall protein kinetic rates did not differ significantly between anemic and control fetuses.

Augmented glucose production is not contingent on high catecholamines in fetal sheep with IUGR

Melissa A. Davis et al.

Summary: In this study, fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) were found to have higher concentrations of catecholamines, but their glucose metabolism adaptation was independent of catecholamines and appeared to be driven by hypoxemia and hypoglycemia.
