Sunscreens and Photoaging: A Review of Current Literature

Current broad-spectrum sunscreens mainly provide protection against UVB and UVA radiation, but visible light and infrared light may also contribute to skin aging. There is a lack of FDA-approved filters for long UVA and visible light protection, while sunscreen additives like antioxidants and photolyases have potential in reversing signs of photoaging.

Their expression increased after exposure to UV radiation, blue light, and dark conditions, with in vitro assays showing their ability to repair CPDs using blue light. This discovery contributes to understanding the functional role of these genes in Antarctic diatoms.
