Non-invasive diagnosis of endometriosis: Immunologic and genetic markers

Seyed Moein Mahini et al.

Summary: Endometriosis is a gynecologic and inflammatory disease characterized by endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus, leading to pelvic pain and infertility. It affects around 10% of females, causing a significant socioeconomic burden and impacting daily quality of life. Diagnosis is often delayed due to the lack of specific symptoms and accessible bio-markers. Recent research has focused on reliable bio-markers including immune cells, antibodies, cytokines, genetic markers, biochemical markers, hormones, glycoproteins, and signaling molecules. However, further studies are needed to establish the role of these markers in the diagnosis, progression, and staging of endometrial lesions.

Role of Genomic and Molecular Biology in the Modulation of the Treatment of Endometrial Cancer: Narrative Review and Perspectives

Ilaria Cuccu et al.

Summary: Endometrial cancer (EC) is a common gynecological malignancy, and molecular and genomic profiling have shown promise in predicting recurrence risk. However, there is limited data on therapeutic value. Ongoing studies are focused on identifying appropriate adjuvant strategies, especially for patients with positive nodes and low volume disease. Molecular classification has the potential to improve risk stratification and management in EC patients. This review aims to explore the evolution of molecular classification and its impact on research and clinical management.

Barriers to a Timely Diagnosis of Endometriosis A Qualitative Systematic Review

Sophie Davenport et al.

Summary: This study identified barriers to timely diagnosis of endometriosis from both patient and healthcare professional perspectives. The key themes included individual factors, interpersonal influences, health system factors, and factors specific to endometriosis. These findings may guide future strategies to reduce diagnostic delays.

The ischemic time window of ectopic endometrial tissue crucially determines its ability to develop into endometriotic lesions

Jeannette Rudzitis-Auth et al.

Summary: Endometriosis develops from shed endometrial fragments via retrograde menstruation, and avascular periods have a significant impact on the survival and development of ectopic endometrial tissue.

Indole-3-Carbinol Inhibits the Growth of Endometriotic Lesions by Suppression of Microvascular Network Formation

Jeannette Rudzitis-Auth et al.

Summary: This study investigated the suppressive effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) on the development of endometriotic lesions in mice. The results showed that I3C effectively inhibited the growth and vascularization of endometriotic lesions without inducing side effects on reproductive organs.

IL-17: an important pathogenic factor in endometriosis

Jia-Lu Shi et al.

Summary: Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a proinflammatory cytokine derived from Th17 cells, which plays a pivotal role in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. It is also linked to endometriosis, where IL-17 expression is up-regulated. IL-17 is involved in the regulation of immune microenvironment and the growth and invasion of ectopic lesions, suggesting its therapeutic value in endometriosis.

Tracing location by applying Emerald luciferase in an early phase of murine endometriotic lesion formation

Hermawan Wibisono et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel animal model of endometriosis using bioluminescence technology to observe lesion formation in the early phase. The accuracy of tracing was high, and the preferred location of the uterus was fixed immediately after transplantation.

Targeting sphingosine kinase-1 with the low MW inhibitor SKI-5C suppresses the development of endometriotic lesions in mice

Jeannette Rudzitis-Auth et al.

Summary: The inhibition of SPHK1 was found to significantly inhibit the development and vascularization of peritoneal endometriotic lesions, leading to reduced growth, cyst formation, microvessel density, and cell proliferation. In the dorsal skinfold chamber model, inhibition of SPHK1 resulted in smaller lesion size, lower functional microvessel density, smaller microvessel diameters, and reduced blood perfusion of the newly developing microvascular networks.

Bioluminescent imaging in induced mouse models of endometriosis reveals differences in four model variations

Ashley Dorning et al.

Summary: The nature of the donor uterine material was found to be a key factor in determining the chronicity and cellular composition of endometriosis lesions, with varying severity of pain-like behavior across different models. Cetrorelix significantly reduced lesion bioluminescence in all models, but had different impacts on pain-like behavior.

Circulating miRNAs Related to Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transitions (EMT) as the New Molecular Markers in Endometriosis

Anna Zubrzycka et al.

Summary: Endometriosis is a complex chronic gynecological disease that requires advanced diagnostic tools due to its heterogeneous etiopathogenesis, clinical symptoms, and lack of specific non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers. Research suggests that microRNAs (miRNAs) may serve as suitable diagnostic biomarkers for endometriosis, particularly those related to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), but the results of related studies are currently ambiguous.

Summary: The prevalence of endometriosis is found to be higher in developing countries, with variations based on the stage of disease and clinical symptoms. This study highlights the need for further research on global factors influencing endometriosis prevalence to inform future prevention strategies.
