MicroRNA-based signature for diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer using residuum of fecal immunochemical test

Chia-Chun Chen et al.

Summary: This study identified a miRNA signature in stool samples that is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC). The miRNA signature showed high sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing CRC from control groups. It was also associated with poor outcome and can be used in combination with fecal immunochemical tests to identify high-risk individuals.

HNRNPA2B1-Mediated MicroRNA-92a Upregulation and Section Acts as a Promising Noninvasive Diagnostic Biomarker in Colorectal Cancer

Yiling Li et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that miR-92a in serum/plasma showed better diagnostic efficacy for colorectal cancer (CRC) compared to stool samples. Knockdown of HNRNPA2B1 resulted in decreased expression and secretion of miR-92a in CRC cells. The presence of common peaks of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and HNRNPA2B1 in miR-92a indicated that HNRNPA2B1 mediated the expression of miR-92a through m6A modification. These findings suggest that blood-derived miR-92a could serve as a noninvasive biomarker for CRC and provide new insights into its mechanisms of expression and secretion.

Fecal microRNAs, Fecal microRNA Panels, or Combinations of Fecal microRNAs with Fecal Hemoglobin for Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer and Its Precursors: A Systematic Review

Zitong Zhao et al.

Summary: Screening for colorectal cancer is effective in reducing both CRC incidence and mortality in the general population. Fecal miRNA markers have been proposed as promising biomarkers for early detection of CRC. However, there is substantial heterogeneity in the methodology of studies, and more large-scale prospective and well-designed studies are needed to validate promising miRNAs or miRNA panels.

Differential urinary microRNA expression analysis of miR-1, miR-215, miR-335, let-7a in childhood nephrotic syndrome

Mohanapriya Chinambedu Dandapani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the expression status of four miRNAs (miR-1, miR-215-5p, miR-335-5p, and let-7a-5p) in urine samples from children with NS. The results showed that these miRNAs were upregulated in both SSNS and SRNS compared to the control group. Additionally, let-7a was found to be differentially expressed between SSNS and SRNS. These miRNAs could serve as novel biomarkers to distinguish NS from healthy controls.

miR-31-5p-DMD axis as a novel biomarker for predicting the development and prognosis of sporadic early-onset colorectal cancer

Changqin Liu et al.

Summary: The incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing in young adults and the molecular features of sporadic early-onset colorectal cancer are not well understood. This study identified the miR-31-5p-DMD axis as a potential key regulatory axis in sporadic early-onset colorectal cancer and found that DMD expression is closely associated with patient prognosis.

Circulating miR-627-5p and miR-199a-5p are promising diagnostic biomarkers of colorectal neoplasia

Dong-Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study identified miR-199a-5p and miR-627-5p as candidate circulating cell-free miRNA biomarkers for colorectal neoplasms. The diagnostic power of miR-672-5p was high, and the logistic integrated model combining miR-199a-5p and miR-627-5p showed higher diagnostic performance. Additionally, the expression levels of these miRNAs were tumor-associated in colorectal neoplasm patients and acted as tumor suppressors in colorectal cancer cells.

The Clinical Value of Blood miR-654-5p, miR-126, miR-10b, and miR-144 in the Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer

Gang Du et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify novel and effective diagnostic markers for colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis. By analyzing exosomal miRNA expression data, five miRNAs related to CRC diagnosis were identified and used to construct classifiers. Integrated feature selection (IFS) and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that these four miRNAs could effectively distinguish CRC samples from normal samples. qRT-PCR analysis confirmed similar expression trends in clinical blood samples. These findings suggest that these four miRNAs could serve as tumor biomarkers for CRC diagnosis and provide innovative thinking for early-stage CRC diagnosis.

Summary: MiRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that regulate posttranscriptional gene expression by interacting with target mRNAs. The finely controlled biogenesis, target recognition, and degradation of miRNAs play crucial roles in maintaining cell proliferation, growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. MiRNAs have emerged as potential biomarkers for disease diagnosis, with their expression and activity varying in different contexts such as developmental stages, tissues, and responses to external stimuli.

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
