Structural Characteristics and Properties of Cocoon and Regenerated Silk Fibroin from Different Silkworm Strains

Yeon Jin Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural characteristics and properties of silkworm cocoons and silk fibroins (SFs) from ten different silkworm strains. The morphological structure of the cocoons varied depending on the silkworm strains. The degumming ratio of silk ranged from 22.8% to 28%, and the solution viscosities of SFs showed a 12-fold difference. The mechanical properties of the regenerated SF film were significantly influenced by the silkworm strains.

Preparation, Structural Characterization, and Properties of Natural Silk Non-woven Fabrics from Different Silkworm Varieties

Su Jin Kim et al.

Summary: The fabrication of natural silk non-woven fabrics from different silkworm varieties was investigated, and it was found that the silk variety had little influence on the properties of the resulting fabric. Instead, the reeling bath temperature and hot press treatment had a stronger effect on the fabric's structure and properties. It was concluded that silk non-woven fabrics with various properties could be manufactured by carefully selecting the silkworm variety and adjusting the process parameters.

Silk/Rayon Webs and Nonwoven Fabrics: Fabrication, Structural Characteristics, and Properties

Yu Jeong Bae et al.

Summary: Silk, a naturally occurring material, is widely used in biomedical and cosmetic applications. A silk nonwoven fabric with good mechanical properties was developed using sericin binding property. Silk/rayon composite nonwoven fabrics were developed to increase productivity and decrease production costs. The results showed that as the silk content increased, the fabric had decreased porosity and moisture regain, increased maximum stress and decreased elongation. Regardless of the composition, all silk/rayon nonwoven fabrics showed good cytocompatibility, making them promising materials for cosmetic and biomedical applications.

A freeze-thawing method applied to the fabrication of 3-d curdlan/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels as scaffolds for cell culture

Ling Ding et al.

Summary: An innovative composite hydrogel of curdlan (CD)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with a 3-D network structure was successfully fabricated in this work through freeze-thaw processing. The composite hydrogel showed enhanced mechanical strength and ductility with increasing PVA concentration, while also exhibiting no cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility with mouse fibroblast cells. The developed porous biohydrogels have great potential for cell growth environment as scaffolds in soft tissue engineering applications.
