The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Neutrophils, Angiogenesis, and Cancer

Irem Ozel et al.

Summary: Tumor angiogenesis is a critical step in cancer progression, and neutrophils have been found to play an important role in this process. This review summarizes the pro-angiogenic functions of neutrophils and discusses the potential for targeting these cells in anti-cancer therapy.

Role of Inflammatory Cytokines, Growth Factors and Adipokines in Adipogenesis and Insulin Resistance

Layla Al-Mansoori et al.

Summary: Obesity, characterized by increased adiposity, is a major cause of morbidity in developed countries, increasing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Activation of macrophages and secretion of chemokines exacerbate the dysfunction of adipose tissue and the risk of insulin resistance. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in adipogenesis and insulin resistance could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for individuals at higher risk of these conditions.

3D-Cultured Vascular-Like Networks Enable Validation of Vascular Disruption Properties of Drugs In Vitro

Prabhusrinivas Yavvari et al.

Summary: Vascular-disrupting agents are an interesting class of anticancer compounds that can prevent new blood vessel formation and disrupt existing vasculature in tumors. The lack of appropriate in vitro angiogenesis models has hindered the validation of these drugs' vascular disruption properties. This study reports a novel indirect coculture model that successfully forms three-dimensional vascular-like networks for testing the effects of antiangiogenic and vascular disrupting agents.

Is subcutaneous adipose tissue expansion in people living with lipedema healthier and reflected by circulating parameters?

Pamela A. Nono Nankam et al.

Summary: Lipedema is a model for healthy expandability of subcutaneous adipose tissue, characterized by disproportional and symmetrical accumulation of subcutaneous adipose tissue in the lower-body parts and extremities. Women with lipedema have better glucose metabolism regulation and higher adiponectin levels, but also higher total cholesterol, LDL-C, inflammation, and oxidative stress markers compared to controls.

The adipocyte-enriched secretory protein tetranectin exacerbates type 2 diabetes by inhibiting insulin secretion from ? cells

Fen Liu et al.

Summary: This study identifies tetranectin as a negative regulator of insulin secretion in pancreatic β cells and suggests that neutralization of tetranectin levels may provide a new treatment strategy for type 2 diabetes.

The adipocyte-enriched secretory protein tetranectin exacerbates type 2 diabetes by inhibiting insulin secretion from β cells

Fen Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, tetranectin (TN) was identified as a negative regulator of insulin secretion in diabetes. TN inhibits insulin secretion by binding selectively to β cells and blocking calcium channels. Neutralization of TN levels may provide a new treatment strategy for type 2 diabetes.

Inflammatory Mechanisms Contributing to Endothelial Dysfunction

Panagiotis Theofilis et al.

Summary: Maintenance of endothelial cell integrity is crucial for human health, as dysfunction can lead to various diseases. Activated and injured endothelial cells release inflammatory mediators and enter a pro-thrombotic state, ultimately promoting atherosclerosis progression. Various pathways and mechanisms contribute to endothelial dysfunction, highlighting the complexity of this process.
