Potential for modulation of platelet function via adenosine receptors during inflammation

Magdalena Boncler et al.

Summary: Traditionally, platelets are known for their role in haemostasis and thrombosis, but they also play a crucial role in inflammation and immunity. Platelets secrete molecules and interact with cells, and they express receptors involved in pathogen recognition. Platelet adenosine receptors, specifically the A(2A) and A(2B) subtypes, have been identified as potential targets for inhibiting platelet activation and down-regulating inflammation or immunity. This article reviews the pharmacological potential of adenosine and other agonists of these receptors in modulating platelet function during inflammation.

Antioxidant Capacity and Antiplatelet Activity of Aqueous Extracts of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Obtained with Microwave and Ultrasound Assisted Extraction

Lyanne Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antiplatelet and antioxidant potential of common bean landraces. Microwave-assisted extraction showed higher phenol content and antioxidant activity in most extracts. The extract obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction from one landrace had the highest antiplatelet potential.

The NO/cGMP/PKG pathway in platelets: The therapeutic potential of PDE5 inhibitors in platelet disorders

Anisa Degjoni et al.

Summary: Platelets play a crucial role in the blood circulation system, but their uncontrolled activation can lead to thrombosis. Nitric oxide released by the endothelium stimulates guanylyl cyclase to produce cGMP, which inhibits platelet activation and has therapeutic potential in cardiovascular diseases. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors show promise in inhibiting platelet aggregation and may have beneficial effects in treating various conditions when combined with nitric oxide donors.

Preparations from selected cucurbit vegetables as antiplatelet agents

Agata Rolnik et al.

Summary: Certain fruits and vegetables like onion, garlic, and beetroot have anti-platelet potential which may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Among the tested cucurbit preparations, the yellow Cucurbita pepo var. patisoniana demonstrated stronger anti-platelet properties, affecting platelet adhesion and inhibiting arachidonic acid metabolism and GPIIb/IIIa expression on activated platelets.

Platelet Function, Role in Thrombosis, Inflammation, and Consequences in Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders

Lisa Repsold et al.

Summary: Platelets play a crucial role in homeostasis, thrombosis, inflammation, cancer progression, and metastasis by releasing pro-inflammatory factors to regulate immune function and inflammatory processes. Despite our understanding of platelets in these processes, the complete interrelation and extent of these processes are still not fully understood.

Platelet inhibition by P2Y12 antagonists is potentiated by adenosine signalling activators

Chih-Chin Shih et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a synergistic relationship between P2Y(12) receptor antagonists and adenosine signaling, with their efficacy partly dependent on the presence of endogenous adenosine. Despite reported differences in their effects upon adenosine reuptake, both prasugrel and ticagrelor show similar synergistic effects on platelet inhibition in the presence of adenosine or NECA.

Inflammatory Mechanisms Contributing to Endothelial Dysfunction

Panagiotis Theofilis et al.

Summary: Maintenance of endothelial cell integrity is crucial for human health, as dysfunction can lead to various diseases. Activated and injured endothelial cells release inflammatory mediators and enter a pro-thrombotic state, ultimately promoting atherosclerosis progression. Various pathways and mechanisms contribute to endothelial dysfunction, highlighting the complexity of this process.
