Residual Microscopic Peritoneal Metastases after Macroscopic Complete Cytoreductive Surgery for Advanced High-Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma: A Target for Folate Receptor Targeted Photodynamic Therapy?

Summary: This study aimed to determine the expression of folate receptor alpha (FR alpha) in residual microscopic peritoneal metastases (mPM) after complete macroscopic cytoreductive surgery (CRS) in patients with advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). The results showed that FR alpha expression was positive in mPM for 75% of patients, and in macroscopic peritoneal metastases for 86% of patients with mPM. In patients without mPM, FR alpha expression was found in 78% of patients with macroscopic peritoneal metastases. This suggests that FR alpha is well expressed in patients with advanced HGSOC after complete macroscopic CRS.
