Nanoscale transformations of amphiboles within human alveolar epithelial cells

Ruggero Vigliaturo et al.

Summary: Amphibole asbestos particles undergo transformations within alveolar epithelial cells, resulting in the formation of an iron-rich layer. This iron-rich material produced by internalized particles differs significantly from extracellular asbestos bodies in terms of phosphorus content.

Enhanced terrestrial Fe(II) mobilization identified through a novel mechanism of microbially driven cave formation in Fe(III)-rich rocks

Ceth W. Parker et al.

Summary: Microbially-mediated reductive Fe(III) dissolution transforms poorly soluble Fe(III) phases into soluble Fe(II), leading to mass separation and wall collapse behind cave walls, ultimately forming the cave void. This novel mechanism of speleogenesis may explain BIF dissolution and REE enrichment, and also identify a previously overlooked source of continental Fe.

Environmentally Relevant Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Produce Limited Acute Pulmonary Effects in Rats at Realistic Exposure Levels

Chang Guo et al.

Summary: Iron is typically the dominant metal in ultrafine particles in the air, but studies on the toxicity of inhaled nano-sized iron oxide particles have produced contradictory results. This study focused on analyzing the potential toxicity of different forms of FeO(x)NPs reflecting characteristics of high iron content particles found in the environment, with experiments showing Fe3O4 and FeOx-mix to be more cytotoxic than Fe2O3 forms. Results from in vitro and in vivo studies did not show significant adverse effects at concentrations similar to airway exposure levels, suggesting no toxicity from the materials tested.

Ferroptosis-dependent extracellular vesicles from macrophage contribute to asbestos-induced mesothelial carcinogenesis through loading ferritin

Fumiya Ito et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel mechanism in which extracellular vesicles mediate the transfer of mutagenic factors associated with asbestos to mesothelial cells. It was found that FedEVs transport iron from ferroptotic macrophages to mesothelial cells, contributing to asbestos-induced mesothelioma. Mesothelial cells receiving higher amounts of FedEVs were found to be in mitotic phases, particularly in S and G2/M phases.

Evidences on As(III) and As(V) interaction with iron(III) oxides: Hematite and goethite

Nicy Ajith et al.

Summary: The study revealed that during the sorption process, arsenic undergoes redox reactions with iron oxides, with As(III) adsorption resulting in the production of As(V) and simultaneous reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Conversely, As(V) sorption leads to Fe(II) oxidation followed by As(V) reduction.

Chemo-physical properties of asbestos bodies in human lung tissues studied at the nano-scale by non-invasive, label free x-ray imaging and spectroscopic techniques

Fabrizio Bardelli et al.

Summary: In the lungs, asbestos forms Asbestos Bodies (AB) with a Fe-rich coating, serving as the interface between foreign fibers and the host organism. A novel combination of x-ray tomography and spectroscopy allowed the study of unaltered lung tissue samples containing chrysotile and crocidolite asbestos. The composition of all ABs analyzed was similar, indicating possible sources of Fe from the fibers or the host organism, with a decrease in silicon concentration from core to rim.

Perls' Prussian Blue Stains of Lung Tissue, Bronchoalveolar Lavage, and Sputum

Andrew J. Ghio et al.

Summary: The use of Perls' Prussian blue (PPB) stain is widespread in clinical medicine and research for identifying Fe3+ associated with hemosiderin, with ongoing novel applications. Structures that stain with PPB in lung tissue, BAL, and sputum include ferruginous bodies with either inorganic or carbonaceous cores. Macrophages are the only cells that stain with PPB in lung tissue, BAL, and sputum, known as iron- and hemosiderin-laden macrophages called siderophages or sideromacrophages.
