An arginine-to-histidine mutation in flavanone-3-hydroxylase results in pink strawberry fruits

Pengbo Xu et al.

Summary: Fruit color is an important factor for consumers when choosing fruits, and pink strawberries are often sold at higher prices and have greater economic benefits due to their outstanding color. In this study, a mutant with pink fruits and green petioles was identified through EMS mutagenesis in woodland strawberry. Sequencing and functional verification confirmed that the mutation occurred in a gene encoding flavanone-3-hydroxylase (F3H) in the anthocyanin synthesis pathway. Further experiments showed that this mutation resulted in a reduced ability of the mutated F3H protein to catalyze the conversion of substrates, leading to a blockage in the anthocyanin synthesis pathway. The identification of this key residue controlling anthocyanin synthesis provides a clear target for molecular breeding of strawberry varieties with pink-colored fruits, which is of significant commercial value.

Functional Characterization of Flavanone 3-Hydroxylase (F3H) and Its Role in Anthocyanin and Flavonoid Biosynthesis in Mulberry

Mingjie Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, the MazsF3H gene was cloned and characterized from Morus atropurpurea var. Zhongshen 1, and its important role in the accumulation of anthocyanin in fruits was discovered. The expression levels of F3H varied in different mulberry varieties, possibly related to fruit color. Overexpression of MazsF3H in tobacco resulted in decreased anthocyanin content, while down-regulation of F3H expression levels led to a significant decrease in anthocyanin content.

Plants and rhizospheric environment: Affected by zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). A review

Lingrui Liu et al.

Summary: Currently, the agricultural sector faces various critical issues, such as reduced crop productivity caused by environmental factors. Nanotechnology, as a sustainable agricultural technology, holds great potential for development. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have gained attention as nano-fertilizers, nano growth regulators, and nano-pesticides in agriculture due to their beneficial properties. This study reviews the literature on the interaction between ZnO NPs and plants, focusing on their uptake and transport pathways, mechanisms involved in enhancing growth and resistance, effects on the rhizospheric environment, and toxic effects and mechanisms in plants. The study concludes that ZnO NPs can be absorbed by plants through roots and leaves, with subsequent transformations. Moderate application can promote plant growth and alleviate stress, whereas excessive application may lead to toxic effects. The effects on the rhizospheric environment should not be ignored. This study provides valuable insights for the safe and effective use of ZnO NPs in agricultural production.

Integration of morphological, physiological, cytological, metabolome and transcriptome analyses reveal age inhibited accumulation of flavonoid biosynthesis in Ginkgo biloba leaves

Qingjie Wang et al.

Summary: Age affects the content of flavonoids in ginkgo leaves, with only 1-to-5-year-old leaves being suitable for the extraction of medicinal compounds. The study found that the flavonoid content decreased with age, and the downregulation of key structural genes in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway may explain this decrease. Additionally, photosynthesis- and hormone-related genes were downregulated with increasing age, suggesting their influence on flavonoid content.
