Antimicrobial activity of ion-substituted calcium phosphates: A systematic review

Robert Kamphof et al.

Summary: This systematic review quantitatively assessed the antimicrobial effect of ion-substituted calcium phosphate biomaterials. The literature search was conducted up to December 6, 2021. Study selection and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers using a modified version of the OHAT tool. Differences were resolved through consensus or by a referee. The relationship between the degree of ionic substitution and bacterial reduction was investigated using a mixed effects model. Out of 1016 identified studies, 108 were included in the analysis. Selenite, copper, zinc, rubidium, gadolinium, silver, and samarium showed clear antimicrobial effects. There was considerable variation between studies, which could be attributed to differences in material formulation, study quality, and microbial strain. Future research should focus on clinically relevant scenarios in vitro and the translation to in vivo prevention of PJI.

Anticancer efficiency of doxorubicin and berberine-loaded PCL nanofibers in preventing local breast cancer recurrence

Samira Mozaffari et al.

Summary: Combining anticancer drugs with plant-derived natural products enhances cytotoxicity in cancer cells and reduces toxicity in normal cells. This study showed that loading the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) and berberine (BBR) into poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers increased cytotoxicity in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The dual-drug nanofibers also significantly reduced the expression of the BCL-2 gene and increased the expression of the Caspase-3 gene compared to single-drug nanofibers. These findings suggest that dual-drug encapsulated nanofibers could be a safe and promising strategy for preventing local cancer recurrence after breast cancer surgery.

Morphological Control of Freeze-Structured Scaffolds by Selective Temperature and Material Control in the Ice-Templating Process

Annika Seifert et al.

Summary: The research highlights the importance of selecting process parameters during directional solidification of polymer solutions to control pore structure and orientation. By adjusting external temperature gradients and cooling surface temperatures, aligned pores can be achieved in biopolymer samples. However, loss of control over pore orientation may occur if the overall system temperature is too low or the viscosity of chitosan solutions is too high.
