Developing first microsatellites and analysing genetic diversity in six chia (Salvia hispanica L.) cultivars

G. H. Yue et al.

Summary: Chia, an emerging industry crop with high content of omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber in its seeds, lacks polymorphic and codominant DNA markers for genetic analysis. This study identified and characterized fourteen polymorphic microsatellites in chia, revealing low genetic variation among cultivars from Mexico, Australia, and Bolivia. The findings suggest that a breeding program for chia should incorporate seeds from multiple cultivars to increase genetic variation.

Plant Secondary Metabolites as Defense Tools against Herbivores for Sustainable Crop Protection

Pratap Adinath Divekar et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved adaptive strategies to defend against herbivores by synthesizing plant secondary metabolites (PSMs). PSMs play important roles in detecting and responding to herbivore attacks, and have limited adaptability to insects. They cause direct toxicity to pests and indirectly protect plants by attracting herbivore natural enemies. Understanding the molecular regulation of PSM biosynthesis can contribute to improving plant tolerance to herbivores.

Review: Trait plasticity during plant-insect interactions: From molecular mechanisms to impact on community dynamics

Himani Ashra et al.

Summary: Phenotypic plasticity is an important adaptive mechanism that allows organisms to respond to environmental changes. In the context of plant-insect interactions, phenotypic plasticity plays a crucial role and can be modulated by the associations with microbial communities. Understanding the impact of phenotypic plasticity on these interactions provides insights into the co-evolution of plants and insects.

Jasmonic acid: a key frontier in conferring abiotic stress tolerance in plants

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: Recent discoveries have shown that phytohormones like jasmonic acid play a crucial role in helping plants adapt to unfavorable environments and protect cells from harm under abiotic stresses. Jasmonic acid is involved in various physiological and biochemical processes associated with plant growth, development, and defense mechanisms. It works in a complex signaling pathway with other plant growth regulators to enhance antioxidant defense and maintain cellular integrity.

Arabidopsis cell wall composition determines disease resistance specificity and fitness

Antonio Molina et al.

Summary: Plant cell walls play a crucial role in disease resistance responses, with Arabidopsis cell wall mutants showing altered resistance responses to different pathogens compared to wild-type plants. Enhanced resistance of the mutants negatively impacted their fitness traits, despite not involving canonical immune pathways, suggesting the importance of plant wall composition in immune response modulation and trade-offs.
