A pH-Controlled Solid Inhibitor Based on PAM Hydrogel for Steel Corrosion Protection in Wide Range pH NaCl Medium

Qing Yang et al.

Summary: A solid corrosion inhibitor with pH-controlled release properties was synthesized based on poly-acrylamide (PAM) and oleate imidazoline (OIM) to provide long-term corrosion protection for carbon steel in NaCl solutions with different pH values. The OIM inhibitors were successfully loaded into PAM hydrogel with a high OIM encapsulation content (39.64 wt.%), as confirmed by SEM, FTIR, and TGA results. The release behavior of OIM from the hydrogel structure showed two stages, quick release and sustained release, which were affected by the pH of the solutions.

Self-healing polymer coating with efficient delivery for alginates and calcium nitrite to provide corrosion protection for carbon steel

Nobuko Yoshimoto et al.

Summary: This study developed a polymer coating that can bind alginates and multivalent cations. Cellulose nanofibers were used to create pathways for the release of corrosion inhibitors, providing corrosion protection. The position of the inhibitors in the coating affected their effectiveness, with calcium nitrite layer spreading to the damaged area first, followed by the alginate layer. The combination of an 8% calcium nitrite layer and a 5% alginate layer showed excellent self-healing properties.

Gallium containing calcium phosphates: Potential antibacterial agents or fictitious truth

Marika Mosina et al.

Summary: The functionalization of biomaterials, particularly calcium phosphates, plays a crucial role in enhancing lifestyle and modulating modern diseases. While previous studies have focused on the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells and bone progenitor cells, the aspect of antibacterial properties has been largely overlooked. This study provides a comprehensive overview of gallium containing calcium phosphates (GaCaPs), including their synthesis methods, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility. The incorporation of gallium offers a potential solution to address the increasing antibiotic resistance of bacteria. A systematic approach is highly necessary to determine the recognition and feasibility of GaCaPs in the field of therapeutics.

Review of Octacalcium Phosphate Materials for Bone Tissue Engineering

A. Yu Fedotov et al.

Summary: Currently, reconstructive bone surgery often utilizes calcium phosphate materials, especially octacalcium phosphate (OCP), due to its mechanical compatibility, biocompatibility, and potential for bone tissue regeneration. However, OCP faces challenges in terms of constructional properties and biological activity when repairing critical size defects. Therefore, it is crucial to search for alternative methods to create porous materials from thermally unstable calcium phosphates like OCP, with desired composition and properties. This review focuses on the development of OCP calcium phosphate materials, including their physicochemical basics, structuring regularities, and properties, as well as additive technologies for personalized bone tissue engineering implants.

Summary: Repairing severe bone defects is a challenge in orthopedics. Three-dimensional printing technology is used to create advanced bone tissue engineering scaffolds for promoting bone regeneration. In addition to osteogenic induction, angiogenesis is crucial for bone reconstruction. Researchers constructed a 3D-printed composite titanium scaffold system loaded with a thermosensitive collagen hydrogel containing vascular endothelial growth factor and bone morphogenetic protein-9. The system showed good biocompatibility and promoted angiogenesis and osseointegration in vivo. This study provides a theoretical basis for developing bioactive implant interfaces for patients with osteogenic defects.
