Amorphous carbon thin films: Mechanisms of hydrogen incorporation during magnetron sputtering and consequences for the secondary electron emission

C. F. Adame et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic characterization of deuterium-contaminated a-C coatings was performed to establish a correlation between hydrogen content and secondary electron emission properties. The results showed that hydrogen impurities increase the secondary electron yield (SEY) of a-C films. Mechanisms of contamination were also investigated, revealing a process involving target poisoning and physical sputtering. The maximum SEY (SEYmax) increased linearly with relative D/H amounts between 11% and 47%, and abruptly increased in the range of 47%-54% when the nature of the deposited films changed.

Non-monotonic dependence of heat loads induced by electron cloud on bunch population at the LHC

Galina Skripka et al.

Summary: Electron cloud effects are a major performance limitation for the Large Hadron Collider, and the heat load induced by electron impacts on the beam screens has significant implications for the cryogenic system. Numerical simulations and experimental data were used to study the dependence of the heat load on beam parameters, particularly the bunch population, in order to plan for the HL-LHC upgrade.

Accessing the robustness of adventitious carbon for charge referencing (correction) purposes in XPS analysis: Insights from a multi-user facility data review

Mark C. Biesinger

Summary: This study assessed the usage and effectiveness of common charge referencing methodologies for insulating samples in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results. It was found that using adventitious carbon (AdC) as a charge reference gave satisfactory and meaningful results in 95% of the cases assessed. Electrical isolation of mixed insulating/semi-conducting/conducting samples was also shown to significantly improve outcomes.

The impact of H2 and N2 on the material properties and secondary electron yield of sputtered amorphous carbon films for anti-multipacting applications

H. Moreno Fernandez et al.

Summary: Amorphous carbon thin films were prepared by sputtering in Ar discharge with small amounts of H-2 and/or N-2 injected to improve film properties for electron cloud mitigation in particle accelerators. The addition of H-2 increased SEY, while the addition of N-2 decreased SEY, and the combination of N-2 and H-2 led to an average reduction of SEY. The changes in surface composition and sp(2)/sp(3) ratio correlated with modifications in SEY and optical properties.

Systematic and collaborative approach to problem solving using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Neal Fairley et al.

Summary: The methodology presented in this work is a result of interactions between junior and senior XPS users within the CasaXPS framework, particularly through workshops organized by IMN. The discussions from these workshops have been instrumental in developing the XPS data processing concept and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in surface analysis problem-solving. This methodology has evolved over subsequent workshops and now represents the philosophy used in CasaXPS spectral data processing paradigm.
