Use of Yucca (Yucca schidigera) Extracts as Biostimulants to Promote Germination and Early Vigor and as Natural Fungicides

Patricia Benito et al.

Summary: Climate change is leading to increased drought and salinity, which threatens food production. Biostimulants, such as yucca extracts, have been found to promote plant growth under different abiotic stress conditions. These extracts have shown particular effectiveness in enhancing germination and early vigor, as well as acting as a natural fungicide. Overall, yucca extracts offer a new and useful tool for farmers to combat the effects of climate change on crop production.

Application of Potassium Humate and Salicylic Acid to Mitigate Salinity Stress of Common Bean

Hossam S. El-Beltagi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of potassium humate (Kh) and salicylic acid (SA) in mitigating salt stress in common bean plants. The application of Kh and SA individually or in combination alleviated the detrimental effects of salt stress on plant growth, leaf pigments, antioxidants, and other parameters compared to the control.

A new insight into the biosynthesis, structure, and functionality of waxy maize starch under drought stress

Wenhao Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of drought stress on the synthesis, structure, and functionality of waxy maize starch. It was found that drought stress decreased the expression of certain genes related to starch synthesis, but increased the expression of others. Drought stress also resulted in no change in chain length but increased the relative content of resistant starch in waxy maize starch. This study is important for breeding, cultivation, and starch application of waxy maize.

Application of potassium humate to reduce arsenic bioavailability and toxicity in rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) during its course of germination and seedling growth

Iravati Ray et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of K-humate (KH) in alleviating arsenic toxicity in rice plants by improving germination, chlorophyll content, and reducing oxidative stress. The application of KH reduced reactive oxygen species formation and improved root anatomical structure under arsenic stress.

A fast method to evaluate in a combinatorial manner the synergistic effect of different biostimulants for promoting growth or tolerance against abiotic stress

Patricia Benito et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of different biostimulants using two different model organisms and explores the additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects of different combinations of biostimulants to design new formulations with enhanced effects on plant growth or tolerance to abiotic stress. The method enables a fast screening of various products in a combinatorial manner to develop novel formulations of natural extracts with biostimulant potential.

Identification of distinctive physiological and molecular responses to salt stress among tolerant and sensitive cultivars of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica)

Sergio Chevilly et al.

Summary: Salt stress is a major constraint for crop productivity, and this study focused on characterizing the salt stress response of different Broccoli cultivars at physiological and molecular levels. The research identified specific markers such as energetic status, sodium extrusion, and proline content that influence broccoli tolerance to salt stress, providing valuable insights for predicting and improving salt tolerance in this crop species.

Physiological and Molecular Characterization of the Differential Response of Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) Cultivars Reveals Limiting Factors for Broccoli Tolerance to Drought Stress

Sergio Chevilly et al.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the drought response of different broccoli cultivars at physiological and molecular levels, identifying traits that may limit drought stress tolerance. Drought-tolerant cultivars show higher levels of methionine and abscisic acid but lower amounts of urea, quinic acid, and gluconic acid lactone. A drought treatment also increases the content of essential amino acids in broccoli leaves and florets, providing useful markers for predicting drought tolerance or breeding new water-scarcity-adapted cultivars.

Khaled Taibi et al.

Summary: The study focused on the selection and improvement of crop salt tolerance using two bean genotypes with varying levels of tolerance to NaCl. It was found that the salt-tolerant genotype Tema exhibited better physiological and molecular responses under salinity stress, making it a more suitable candidate for breeding programs aimed at improving salt tolerance in beans.
