Interfacial Dynamics of Miscible Displacement of Shear-Thinning Fluid in a Vertical Channel

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the displacement of a shear-thinning fluid by a denser and less viscous Newtonian fluid in a vertical duct through experiments and numerical simulations. The degree of shear-thinning significantly influences the development of interfacial patterns and the growth of perturbations. The viscosity contrast between the fluids and the stabilizing density difference play important roles in the onset of instabilities.

Electrohydrodynamic viscous fingering of leaky dielectric fluids in a channel

Jiachen Zhao et al.

Summary: A hybrid numerical model based on the lattice Boltzmann method and finite difference method is developed to investigate the control of viscous fingering using electrohydrodynamics. The effects of electric field strength and direction, as well as fluid properties, on viscous fingering are studied extensively. It is found that a horizontal electric field can either promote or suppress viscous fingering, depending on the permittivity ratio and conductivity ratio. A phase diagram is established to characterize the interfacial morphologies under different electric field orientations and fluid properties.

Impact of interfacial rheology on finger tip splitting

Habakuk Conrado et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of interfacial rheology on the morphology of viscous fingering in Hele-Shaw cells was investigated. The results showed that interfacial rheology, despite stabilizing viscous fingering at the linear regime, actually promotes finger tip widening and enhanced finger tip-splitting events in the early nonlinear stages.

Effect of Hele-Shaw cell gap on radial viscous fingering

Sada Nand et al.

Summary: The flow through a Hele-Shaw cell is an experimental prototype for studying flow through porous media and in microfluidic devices. The effect of the gap between the plates on the flow dynamics and the formation of viscous fingering is explored. It is observed that the onset time of instability and the width of the fingers increase with an increment in the gap, while the instability increases with an increase in Peclet number. The results are validated through numerical simulations using different approaches.

The life span and dynamics of immiscible viscous fingering in rectilinear displacements

A. E. Kampitsis et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamics, interactions, and decay of immiscible viscous fingers in high-aspect ratio systems in both two and three dimensions. Different behaviors are observed based on viscosity ratio and a macroscopic capillary number. The research reveals that periodic tip-splitting and decay can occur at higher viscosity ratios and lower capillary to viscous ratios, leading to a fluctuation between one and two fingers at late time. Similar behaviors in both two and three dimensions suggest that knowledge from 2D linear displacements can be applied to 3D flows.

CFD analysis of viscous fingering in Hele-Shaw cell for air-glycerin system

Akhileshwar Singh et al.

Summary: This research paper presents a numerical study on viscous fingering instability in the 2D horizontal Hele-Shaw cell system of air and glycerin. Through immiscible fluid-fluid displacement, a single finger shape instability appears at the air-glycerin interface. The study uses transient solver, VOF model for interface tracking, and PISO scheme for improved calculation efficiency. The objectives include tracking finger growth and displacement efficiency, with findings showing only 74.15% of glycerin displaced by air.

Numerical investigation of immiscible Liquid-Liquid displacement in Hele-Shaw cell

Akhileshwar Singh et al.

Summary: This study conducted a numerical simulation of immiscible liquid-liquid displacement flow in a two-dimensional rectilinear Hele-Shaw cell, identifying the finger shape instability and viscous fingering at the oil-water interface. By analyzing the process of water displacing oil, it was concluded that the sweep efficiency gradually increases over time during displacement.
