Validation of Claims Algorithms to Identify Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias

Ellen P. McCarthy et al.

Summary: Using billing data from healthcare delivery to identify individuals with dementia is important for research. This study tested the validity of different Medicare claims-based algorithms and found that revised algorithms using Medicare administrative data have reasonable accuracy for research purposes. However, there are tradeoffs between accuracy and sensitivity among these algorithms, and researchers should be aware of these tradeoffs when considering different approaches.

Association of Dementia Severity and Caregiver Support With Early Discharge From Home Health

Sara Knox et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between dementia severity and early discharge from home health. The results suggest that dementia severity does not significantly contribute to early discharge, while individuals who need medication assistance and have unmet caregiver needs have a lower risk of early discharge.

Home health utilization association with discharge to community for people with dementia

Sara Knox et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify home health utilization factors associated with successful discharge to community for patients with and without Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) after home health care. The results showed that physical therapy services, longer episodes of care, and more than 10 visits increased the likelihood of successful discharge to community, while speech therapy, nursing, home health aide visits, and early discharge decreased the likelihood. Understanding these factors is important for improving home health outcomes for ADRD patients.

Priorities and Preferences of People Living with Dementia or Cognitive Impairment - A Systematic Review

Hannah Wehrmann et al.

Summary: This study summarized the preferences of people living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment regarding various aspects of healthcare and everyday life, highlighting their preferences for early diagnosis, caregiver quality of life, participation in medical decisions, individualized care, close bonds with family, and empathy in treatment. Understanding and considering these preferences can potentially improve patient-reported outcomes in treatment, care, and support services.
