A viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model and its finite element implementation of amorphous polymers

Zhihong Liang et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of amorphous polymers from below to above glass transition temperature (Og) were described using a constitutive model based on the combination of multiple relaxation viscoelastic-viscoplastic model and the three-element viscoelastic model. The model successfully captured the strain-softening after yield as well as rate-dependent behaviors above and below Og, and also described the creep and relaxation behaviors of the material. The implemented model was able to reasonably predict the structural responses of amorphous polymers.

Fractional modeling of temperature-dependent mechanical behaviors for glassy polymers

Wei Cai et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a temperature-dependent variable-order fractional constitutive model to describe the mechanical behaviors of glassy polymers. The model establishes the relationship between elastic modulus, relaxation time, and temperature to describe various stages including viscoelastic, softening, and re-hardening. The physical interpretations of fractional orders are revealed based on molecular chains mechanisms. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and predictability of the proposed model in different kinds of glassy polymers.

A thermodynamically-based constitutive theory for amorphous glassy polymers at finite deformations

Tianxiang Lan et al.

Summary: In this work, a fully thermomechanical coupling constitutive theory is developed to explain and predict the complex temperature and rate-related nonlinear behavior of amorphous glassy polymers during finite deformations. The proposed model divides entanglements into permanent and dynamic structures and describes their evolution as the internal mechanism for the material's macroscopic mechanical properties. New constitutive equations related to dynamic and permanent entanglements are proposed, which consider the strain softening caused by the dissociation of dynamic entanglements, the influence of temperature on the dissociation rate, and the effect of the glass transition temperature on the microstructure. The predictive capacity of the proposed theory is demonstrated by comparing the simulations of polycarbonate with experimental results.

Temperature Dependent Dynamic Strain Localization and Failure of Ductile Polymeric Rods under Large Deformation

Longhui Zhang et al.

Summary: Ductile polymers are increasingly used in engineering applications to improve structural reliability under impact loading. However, the localization and post-necking stages of ductile polymers at high strain rates have been less investigated due to experimental limitations. In this study, dynamic strain localization of ductile polymeric rods using transparent polycarbonate as a model material is examined. The results show that the dynamic local strain rate initially increases dramatically due to strain localization, followed by a rapid drop with necking propagation, and then stabilizes until fracture. Two constitutive models for polycarbonate are developed and successfully reproduced in simulations, showing potential applications in impact resistant transparency design.
