An improved springback model considering the transverse stress in microforming

Zhutian Xu et al.

Summary: In order to satisfy the higher accuracy requirement in microforming of thin-walled structures, accurately predicting and controlling springback behavior is necessary. However, conventional springback models for macroforming are not valid for microforming due to the smaller feature size. This study explored the applicability of a springback model for conventional stretch-bending and developed an improved model for microforming of parallel channels based on the effects of transverse stress and non-uniform stretching. The results showed that the improved model provided better estimation of the shift distance of the neutral plane and agreed well with experimental data.

Size effect on the cyclic deformation behavior of superalloy ultrathin sheet: Characterization and multiscale modelling

Weilin He et al.

Summary: Superalloy ultrathin sheets have various excellent mechanical properties and occupy a significant proportion in aeroengines. However, their forming and springback laws are not clear, and the existing models cannot accurately predict their deformation and springback. In this study, cyclic shearing tests were conducted to explore the size effect on the mechanical response of superalloy ultrathin sheets, and a new multiscale cyclic hardening model was proposed. The proposed model accurately describes the cyclic deformation behavior and springback of superalloy ultrathin sheets affected by size effect.

Modification of the surface layer model and establishment of the surface layer thickness model of pure copper

Jiqiang Zhai et al.

Summary: The size effect of flow stress is an important factor in the deformation behavior of materials in microforming. The traditional surface layer model explains the decrease in flow stress with decreasing specimen size at sub-millimeter and micron scales, but it has inconsistencies with reality. To more accurately describe the deformation behavior at the microscale, a modified surface layer model is proposed based on experiments and plastic forming theory, considering the region where the flow stress is lower than that of the internal polycrystalline as the surface layer. The surface-layer-thickness model based on grain size is also proposed and validated with micro upsetting experiments on T2 copper.

Review of additive electrochemical micro-manufacturing technology

Xinchao Li et al.

Summary: Additive electrochemical micro-manufacturing (micro-AECM) is a nontraditional fabrication method that uses electrochemical deposition to manufacture metal-based microstructures layer by layer. It has the advantages of accurate geometric replication, void-free and crack-free microstructures, and is a true additive manufacturing technology. Several micro-AECM techniques have been developed and commercially implemented. This paper introduces the fundamental schematic of electrochemical deposition related to micro-AECM, reviews several typical micro-AECM techniques, and discusses the challenges, development trends and perspectives in micro-AECM.

Grain size and specimen thickness effects on twinning behaviors in high strain rate deformation of ultra-thin pure titanium sheet

Chengxi Zhu et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effects of grain size and specimen thickness on twinning characteristics and texture evolution in ultra-thin pure titanium sheet. The results show that twin density decreases with decreasing sample thickness and increasing grain size. Additionally, grain size has a positive effect on the activation of multiple twin variants and affects misorientation distributions. The deformation mechanism and texture evolution of ultra-thin pure titanium sheet are significantly influenced by size effects.

Size effect on nonlinear unloading behavior and Bauschinger effect of Ni-based superalloy ultrathin sheet

Weilin He et al.

Summary: The size effect of superalloy ultrathin sheet affects its nonlinear unloading behavior and Bauschinger effect. Increasing grain size decreases the flow stress and density of forest dislocation and moving dislocation in superalloy ultrathin sheet, and also leads to more evident degradation of elastic modulus. The Bauschinger effect and the variations of permanent softening and work-hardening stagnation in superalloy ultrathin sheet are influenced by the t/d ratio.

Fabrication of micro channels for titanium PEMFC bipolar plates by multistage forming process

Zhutian Xu et al.

Summary: Bipolar plates made of ultra-thin titanium sheet metals have high corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and strength-weight ratio, making them suitable for proton exchange membrane fuel cells used in vehicles. The stamping process is an efficient method to fabricate fine and complex sub-millimeter channel features on bipolar plates, but the aspect ratio of these micro features is limited by the low forming limit of titanium sheet metals. Improving the aspect ratio through a multistage forming process could enhance the heat and mass transfer in PEMFC, resulting in higher efficiency and performance.
