Analysis of stress and strain concentration around a centralized elliptical hole in a monodomain liquid crystal elastomer sheet

Yuefeng Jiang et al.

Summary: This study extends the discussion of circular holes in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) to more generalized elliptical holes. Using finite element methods, the stress and strain fields around a centralized elliptical hole in a LCE sheet subjected to uniaxial stretches are investigated. The shape factor, defined as the ratio of the minor-to-major axis of the ellipse, is the main focus of the study. Compared to common elastomers like neoHookean, LCEs exhibit higher stress and strain concentration factors (SCFs), with a slight deviation between the locations of maximal strain and maximal stress. The SCFs of LCEs increase more significantly than those of neoHookean with a sharper ellipse, and the deviation diminishes. The unusual behaviors of LCEs are attributed to the spontaneous strain induced by director rotation, and attempts are made to correlate stress and strain concentration behaviors to the spontaneous strain in this article.

Summary: Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are soft materials with interesting anisotropic and actuation properties. By designing interpenetrating polymer networks, the high temperature durability and fatigue properties of LCEs can be significantly improved, enabling the fabrication of tough and durable LCE-based actuators for high temperature and cyclic loading.

Topology optimization of thermo-elastic structures considering stiffness, strength, and temperature constraints over a wide range of temperatures

Qingxuan Meng et al.

Summary: This article presents a thermo-elastic topology optimization method that incorporates stiffness, strength, and temperature constraints over a wide range of temperatures. The method considers the state equations for linear elasticity and heat conduction, and formulates minimum volume with compliance, stress, and temperature limits under multiple thermal conditions. It uses global stress and regional temperature metrics to evaluate maximal stress and temperature, and employs a stress stabilizing scheme to overcome iteration oscillation. Additionally, a continuation strategy is developed for the relaxed Heaviside function to achieve clear optimized topologies. Two numerical examples demonstrate the validity and practicability of the approach. The results highlight the importance of considering multiple constraints within a multi-physics model for optimization over a wide temperature range.

Controlled morphing of architected liquid crystal elastomer elements: modeling and simulations

Mattia P. Cosma et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are elastomeric materials with a unique network microstructure that can be induced to deform by temperature changes. Controlled deformation can be achieved by architecting LCE elements with differentiated orientations and transition temperatures. In this research, a theoretical model and numerical analyses were used to demonstrate various deformation examples of architected LCE elements.

Electromechanical deformation of dielectric nematic elastomers accompanied by the rotation of mesogens

Yiwei Xu et al.

Summary: The electromechanical deformation characteristics of dielectric nematic elastomers (DNEs) are investigated through theoretical modeling and numerical simulation. The results show that the electrodeformation of DNEs is caused by both the Maxwell force and rotation of liquid crystal director. DNEs exhibit various modes of electrodeformation, and this can be enhanced and optimized by adjusting the material properties and director orientation.

Dynamic stress analysis of an elliptical cavity during elastic wave propagation in a density-inhomogeneous medium with the modulus varying as a power function

Zai-lin Yang et al.

Summary: Based on the propagation characteristics of elastic waves in an inhomogeneous continuum, this study investigates the dynamic stress concentration caused by an elliptical cavity defect in a complex inhomogeneous continuum. The results show that in the presence of a defect in an inhomogeneous continuum, the dynamic stress concentration that arises when subjected to external forces is profound and the value of the dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) is sensitive to changes in each parameter.

Summary: This study tackles the minimum stress design problem in continuum structures with movable holes for the first time, proposing an effective hybrid methodology that optimizes material density and geometric parameters as design variables. By mapping embedded holes to a density field and introducing a new material interpolation scheme, the optimization model successfully minimizes stress in the system.
