Structural response and energy absorption assessment of corrugated wall mechanical metamaterials under static and dynamic compressive loading

Hang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy absorption performance of corrugated wall metamaterials and its relationship with structure factors, wall thickness, and gradient design using finite element simulations, quasi-static compression tests and dynamic plate-impact tests. The results demonstrate that gradient design can enhance the negative Poisson's ratio and energy absorption efficiency, and that corrugated gradient structures exhibit better energy dissipation performance.

Dynamic penetration behaviors of single/multi-layer graphene using nanoprojectile under hypervelocity impact

Weifu Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamic penetration behavior of graphene was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the crashworthiness performance of graphene is influenced by the number of layers and impact velocity. The deviations from existing models were observed, but these models could still reasonably predict the ballistic limit velocity of graphene with increasing layers. Fractal theory was introduced to quantitatively describe the fracture morphology. The Forrestal-Warren rigid body model II was found to accurately estimate the depth of penetration of multilayer graphene under certain impact velocities. Finally, a modified model was proposed to correlate the specific penetration energy with the number of layers and impact velocity.
