Analysis of the Microscopic Evolution of Rock Damage Based on Real-Time Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Jing Bi et al.

Summary: In this study, real-time T2-weighted nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and imaging were used to characterize the size and distribution of pores in different types of sandstone samples during low-confining-stress triaxial compression tests. It was found that the area of macropores in sandstone increased only during the initial loading stage but played an opposite role in the damage evolution process. The number of pores and mesopores increased during the linear deformation stage, while the number of macropores decreased. A damage model based on the NMR results is proposed.

Exploring the Role of Attitudinal Factors in Electric Vehicle Timeshare Rentals Adoption

Shunchao Wang et al.

Summary: Electric vehicle timeshare rentals (EVTRs) are recognized as a promising solution to traffic congestion, air pollution, and insufficient parking spaces. This study aims to explore the factors affecting EVTR adoption using a household survey. Ten attitudinal factors are extracted, and a mixed logit model is used to estimate the relationship between these factors and EVTR adoption. The results show that perceived comfort, perceived efficiency, subjective evaluation, use preference, and use willingness significantly impact EVTR use frequency, while inconvenience in various aspects has a negative impact. Social pressure has no significant impact. These findings provide insights for efficient planning and decision-making regarding EVTRs.

Crack development and damage patterns under combined dynamic-static loading of parallel double fractured rocks based on DIC technique

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted combined static-dynamic loading tests on refabricated parallel fissured granite using the SHPB system at various confining pressures and dip angles. The DIC was used to monitor strain in the specimens. The research focused on investigating the initiation, expansion, penetration process, and failure mode of double-fractured specimens, as well as discussing the deformation, failure characteristics, and strength change during the failure process. The findings provide an important theoretical basis for underground engineering structures and disaster prevention and mitigation.

An investigation on the effect of crack lengths and wavelengths on the dynamic cracking behaviours of brittle materials using the improved XFEM

Junwei Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, the effects of crack lengths and wavelengths on dynamic cracking behaviors are studied using the improved extended finite element method (XFEM) with coupled absorbing boundary condition. Numerical tests on a plate with a crack are conducted under dynamic loads of different wavelengths to analyze the evolution of displacement and energy affected by cracks. The results show that the angle between the incident dynamic load and the crack leads to a sudden drop in energy. The crack length has little effect on dynamic cracking behaviors, while the wavelength significantly affects the pattern of cracking behavior.

Effects of a weak interlayer zone on the indirect tensile strength and failure characteristics of rock

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: Weak interlayer zones (WIZs) are widespread in rock masses, and their mechanical properties have a potential impact on the stability of rock masses. Brazilian tests and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of WIZ strength and thickness, as well as the loading direction on rock samples. The results showed a linear decrease in failure strength with increasing bedding plane-loading angle, and the loading direction had a significant influence on the failure pattern of specimens. The numerical simulations revealed that failure strength increased with WIZ strength but decreased with WIZ thickness.

Experimental and numerical investigation on the mechanical responses and cracking mechanism of 3D confined single-flawed rocks under dynamic loading

Wei You et al.

Summary: Accurately characterizing the mechanical responses and cracking mechanism of confined fractured rocks under coupled static-dynamic loading is crucial for underground engineering construction. The study investigates the behavior of single-flawed specimens under different axial prestresses and strain rates using a modified SHPB system. The results show that both dynamic strength and total strength are positively correlated with strain rate, with dynamic strength exhibiting higher sensitivity under higher axial prestress. The failure pattern also changes from single diagonal failure to X shaped conjugated failure as axial prestress increases.

Summary: This study utilized impact tests, compression tests, and digital image correlation to investigate the failure characteristics and mechanisms of rock specimens under different pre-stress conditions. The results revealed that pre-stress has dual effects on the dynamic mechanical behavior of rocks, with changes in crack patterns and strain localization observed as pre-stress levels increase.

Mechanical behaviors of conjugate-flawed rocks subjected to coupled static-dynamic compression

Peng Feng et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the mechanical properties of conjugate-flawed rock specimens under coupled static-dynamic compression, and found that the coupled compressive strength and dynamic elastic modulus of the specimens showed remarkable loading rate dependence. The results also demonstrated that higher static pre-stress and strain rate could induce changes in mean fragment size and fractal dimension of the specimens, impacting their distribution of broken fragments. Additionally, the study discussed the failure modes of the specimens under different conditions, such as tensile failure at low strain rates and shear failure at high strain rates.

Dynamic mechanical properties and cracking behaviours of persistent fractured granite under impact loading with various loading rates

Xiao-Ping Zhou et al.

Summary: Previous investigations have focused on intact and non-persistent fractured rocks, leaving a gap in understanding the dynamic mechanical properties and instability failure characteristics of persistent fractured rocks under impact loading. This study experimentally examines the dynamic mechanical properties, failure modes, and energy evolution characteristics of persistent fractured granite with various joint configurations, using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar apparatus. The study particularly investigates the effects of loading rate on dynamic failure and energy evolutions in persistent fractured granite. The findings provide insight into the dynamic failure mechanisms of persistent fracture under different loading rates.

Experimental Study on the Damage Characteristics and Fracture Behaviour of Rock-like Materials with Weak Interlayer Zones

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of the dip angle of the weak interlayer zone (WIZ) on the damage characteristics and fracture behaviors of rock-like samples. The results show that as the angle increases, the specimen transitions from tensile failure to shear failure, and the number of cracks and falling fragments gradually decrease. Moreover, it becomes difficult to predict rock mass failure using acoustic emission (AE) when the WIZ angle is close to 60 degrees.

Dynamic mechanical properties and wave propagation of composite rock-mortar specimens based on SHPB tests

Zhenyu Han et al.

Summary: Filled inclusions in rock discontinuities have a significant impact on the mechanical characteristics and stability of rock engineering. Experimental results show that the interlayer strength influences wave propagation and fracture processes. Increasing interlayer stiffness leads to higher transmission coefficient, strength, closure, and stiffness. The cement mortar layer acts as a buffer, while a weaker interlayer causes slabbing near the rock-mortar interface.
