Analysis of Whole Blood and Urine Trace Elements in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Autistic Behaviors

Gang Zhao et al.

Summary: The relationship between trace elements and neurological development is an emerging research focus. This case-control study investigated the differences in trace element concentrations in blood and urine between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing peers. The study also examined the association between these trace elements and core behaviors of ASD. The results showed that certain trace elements were significantly higher in the blood of ASD cases compared to controls, and these concentrations were correlated with core behaviors of ASD.

HBM4EU from the Coordinator's perspective: lessons learnt from managing a large-scale EU project

Marike Kolossa-Gehring et al.

Summary: In this article, we discuss important management issues faced by the Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) from the perspective of the Coordinator. HBM4EU is a large-scale international collaborative project involving 118 institutions from 30 countries and the European Environment Agency, with a budget of approximately EUR 74 million. The project has established an innovative cooperative network between national and EU authorities and scientific institutions, focusing on the science-policy interface. The article presents four major points related to the project's management, including the need for a well-elaborated Consortium Agreement, the importance of involvement from policy-making authorities, the necessity of a well-financed scientific governance structure, and the potential conflicts created by differential funding rates among project activities. HBM4EU serves as a prototype for future EU-funded large-scale projects addressing the Green Deal and Zero Pollution Ambition in the fields of chemicals, health, and environment.

Our evolved understanding of the human health risks of mercury

Niladri Basu et al.

Summary: Mercury is a worldwide health concern and its regulation is addressed through the Minamata Convention. This review paper highlights the evolution of scientific understanding on mercury, from past poisoning events to recent epidemiological studies. It emphasizes the importance of considering socio-environmental variables and local contexts in health studies, based on diverse source-exposure scenarios across global regions. The paper concludes with perspectives on future mercury health research in the post-Minamata Convention era.

A step towards harmonising human biomonitoring study setup on European level: Materials provided and lessons learnt in HBM4EU

L. Kim Pack et al.

Summary: Human Biomonitoring (HBM) can be used to assess internal exposure of the human body to potentially harmful chemical substances and generate conclusive data on exposure levels. This knowledge can help understand potential risks or monitor the effectiveness of regulatory measures. However, the differing approaches and limited comparability of studies make it challenging to understand exposure on a larger scale.

Implementation and coordination of an ethics framework in HBM4EU-Experiences and reflections

Lisbeth E. Knudsen et al.

Summary: Human biomonitoring involves the use of human samples and data to investigate exposure to environmental chemicals and their impact on human health. HBM4EU developed a coordinated and harmonized approach involving 29 countries in Europe plus Israel. Addressing ethical issues has been an indispensable prerequisite, from the application phase, grant agreement, project performance to the closing of the project. HBM4EU has established a better understanding of the ethics in such projects and the need for a standardised way of reporting and handling of ethics and data exchange, securing compliance with ethics standards, transparency, transferability and sustainability.

Epidemiological evidence for the effect of environmental heavy metal exposure on the immune system in children

Keyang Zheng et al.

Summary: Heavy metals pose a serious public health problem due to their wide presence in daily life and contamination of the environment. Children are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of heavy metal exposure on immune function compared to adults. This review summarizes epidemiological studies on the impact of heavy metal exposure on childhood immune function, focusing on the effects of six heavy metals on different components of the immune system. The review finds that heavy metal exposure, particularly to lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury, impairs immune responses in children and increases the risk of immune-related diseases.

A perspective on persistent toxicants in veterans and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: identifying exposures determining higher ALS risk

Diane B. Re et al.

Summary: Multiple studies show that US veterans are at higher risk of developing ALS compared to civilians, possibly due to neurotoxic exposures experienced during their service. However, limited research has been done on the specific causes of ALS in veterans and biomarker-based assessment of their exposures.

An Alternative Explanation for Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease Initiation from Specific Antibiotics, Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis and Neurotoxins

Kevin Roe

Summary: Late onset neuropathologies such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are associated with genetics, gut dysbiosis, autoimmune diseases, pathogens, and exposure to neurotoxins. The presence of gut dysbiosis can increase the permeability of the intestinal wall and blood-brain barrier, allowing neurotoxins to enter the central nervous system. Factors such as age and genetic vulnerability play a role in the initiation of late onset neuropathologies through the combination of gut dysbiosis and neurotoxin exposure.

Shuyi Ren et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pollution status, distribution patterns, and driving factors of heavy metals in China's farmland soil, showing that industrial and agricultural activities are the main sources of pollution. Regional differences have led to significant spatial heterogeneity of pollution, posing a threat to national food security.

Hair Dye Ingredients and Potential Health Risks from Exposure to Hair Dyeing

Lin He et al.

Summary: Given the popularity of hair dyeing worldwide, it is important to understand the toxicities and risks associated with the chemicals in hair dye formulations. While some compounds in hair dyes are considered safe, there are conflicting data about many formulations. The association between hair dye use and cancer occurrence has been reported in specific subpopulations, but the exact link is still unclear.

Status and environmental management of soil mercury pollution in China: A review

Sijia Liu et al.

Summary: Mercury pollution in soil in China, especially around mines and industrial areas, is a serious issue. The highest mercury content is found in the soil around the Tongren mercury mine in Guizhou Province and thermometer factories. China has developed solidification and stabilization technology to repair mercury-contaminated soil and plans to study more effective stabilizer materials and select mercury-rich plants in the future. China has also established various policies and regulations to manage mercury pollution but still faces challenges in soil remediation technology and environmental management systems.
