Improving plant available water holding capacity of soil by solid and chemically modified biochars

Kazem Ghassemi-Golezani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of solid biochar and chemically modified biochars on water retention in a silty loam soil. The results showed that chemically modified biochars, especially biochar-based nanocomposites of magnesium and manganese and H3PO4 modified biochar, had a better effect on improving water holding capacity by decreasing saturated hydraulic conductivity in the soil.

Life cycle assessment of electricity generation from combustion and gasification of biomass in Mexico

M. M. Parascanu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impacts of using sugarcane and agave bagasse from Mexico as raw materials for bioenergy. It was found that sugarcane cultivation has 2 to 6 times more impact than agave cultivation in almost all impact categories. The best scenario in terms of environmental impact was the combustion of agave bagasse among the four scenarios compared.

Life Cycle Assessment of Substitute Natural Gas production from biomass and electrolytic hydrogen

Eleonora Bargiacchi et al.

Summary: This study compares six different layouts for the production of SNG and electricity using biomass and fluctuating electricity, finding that the layout based on hydrogasification has the lowest environmental impacts in most cases. The selection of functional units and different approaches dealing with co-production of electricity also significantly influence technology ranking.

Reactor Designs and Configurations for Biological and Bioelectrochemical C1 Gas Conversion: A Review

Azize Ayol et al.

Summary: Microbial C1 gas conversion technologies have developed rapidly, converting waste gases into valuable chemicals and fuels, but the mass transfer constraint of substrates to microorganisms remains a challenge. Emerging technologies like syngas fermentation and hydrogenotrophic methanation, as well as the use of a biocathode for CO2 sequestration and production of valuable chemicals, show great potential for sustainability and expanding the product portfolio in C1 gas conversion processes.
