H3PO4/KOH Activation Agent for High Performance Rice Husk Activated Carbon Electrode in Acidic Media Supercapacitors

Nasser A. M. Barakat et al.

Summary: H3PO4/KOH combined solution is an effective activation agent for producing activated carbon from rice husk. The mixed agent decomposes chemical compounds on the rice husk char surface and increases the surface area. Both single and mixed activation agents need to have optimized solution volumes for maximum specific capacitance. The proposed activated carbon shows excellent electrochemical performance and stability.

Carbon Nanofibers-Sheathed Graphite Rod Anode and Hydrophobic Cathode for Improved Performance Industrial Wastewater-Driven Microbial Fuel Cells

Nasser A. M. Barakat et al.

Summary: Carbon nanofiber-decorated graphite rods are introduced as effective and low-cost anodes for microbial fuel cells. The performance is improved by creating a 3D carbon nanofiber layer on the surface of the rods. Additionally, a membrane-less cell coated with electrospun nanofiber layer is used to decrease internal resistance.

Microbial Fuel Cell-Based Biosensor for Simultaneous Test of Sodium Acetate and Glucose in a Mixed Solution

Song Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, two types of MFC sensors, MFC-A and MFC-B, were developed and compared. MFC-A showed superior performance in the detection of sodium acetate and glucose, as well as higher output voltage and power density compared to MFC-B. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and microbial-community analysis revealed a richer anode biomass for MFC-A. A novel method for simultaneous testing of individual concentrations of sodium acetate and glucose in a mixed solution was proposed and verified using the sensitivities of the two MFC sensors.

Using an anion exchange membrane for effective hydroxide ion transport enables high power densities in microbial fuel cells

Ruggero Rossi et al.

Summary: High current densities achieved by bioanodes in electrochemical cells have not translated into higher power densities in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) until now. This study demonstrates that the critical factor for boosting power generation in MFCs is the transfer of OH- ions from the cathode to the bioanode. The results show that using an anion exchange membrane (AEM) in MFCs significantly increases power density compared to using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) or non-ion selective ultrafiltration membrane (UFM).

Simultaneous energy generation, decolorization, and detoxification of the azo dye Procion Red MX-5B in a microbial fuel cell

Erica Janaina Rodrigues de Almeida et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are effective in treating wastewater and generating electricity simultaneously. In this study, an MFC system was specifically targeted for decolorizing and degrading the azo dye Procion Red MX-5B (PRMX), resulting in rapid color removal and total mineralization within 172 hours. The addition of PRMX to the system increased voltage output and power density, with Pseudomonas and Dysgonomonas identified as key players in electron transfer and dye degradation in the biofilm.
