Combustion-derived BaNiO3 nanoparticles as a potential bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

J. Junita et al.

Summary: Solution combustion route derived perovskite type barium nickelate (BaNiO3) nanoparticles showed high electrocatalytic activity for overall water splitting, with over-potentials of 253 mV for OER and 427 mV for HER, achieving a current density of 10 mAcm(-2) in 1.0 M KOH. When used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst in a two-electrode alkaline electrolyser, the BaNiO3 nanoparticles enabled benchmark current density at a low cell voltage of 1.82 V. Remarkably, the electrocatalytic performance of the setup improved by 4.9% after continuous overall water splitting for 24 h at 30 mAcm(-2). Thus, BaNiO3 nanoparticles can serve as a cost-effective alternative for noble metal electrocatalysts in clean H-2 production.

Oxygen vacancy engineering of zinc oxide for boosting piezo-electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xin Xiong et al.

Summary: Vibration-driven piezo-electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction has attracted great interest due to its effective utilization of mechanical energy. However, the catalytic activity of current piezoelectrocatalysts is unsatisfactory, limiting their wide applications. In this study, defect engineering is used to fabricate ZnO catalysts with various oxygen vacancy concentrations, and ZnO with optimal oxygen vacancy concentration shows a high piezo-electrocatalytic H-2 yield under ultrasonic vibration. Controlled experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal the enhanced carrier separation and transfer as well as the important role of oxygen vacancies in facilitating H desorption. This work provides an efficient strategy to improve carrier dynamics and surface reactions for promoting piezoelectrocatalytic H-2 evolution.
