Experimental investigation and semi-empirical modeling of snowflake melting

Summary: The melting process of aggregate-type snowflakes is studied, where the snowflakes are placed in an acoustic levitator with warm air flow. The shape evolution of the snowflake is recorded by a camera, and the total melting time is measured. A model is proposed based on a simplified 3D geometric representation of the snowflake and an accurate estimation of its bulk density, which greatly improves the accuracy of predicting the total melting time compared to existing models.
