Can heavy rainfall affect the burning and smoke spreading characteristics of fire in tunnels?

Chuangang Fan et al.

Summary: Extreme rainfall events due to global warming have been investigated for their impact on tunnel fires and smoke spread. Reduced-scale experiments with varying rainfall intensities, raindrop sizes, and fire heat release rates were conducted. It was found that heavy rainfall induced a longitudinal airflow inside the tunnel, causing the flame to tilt towards the no-rainfall portal. This induced airflow had a limited effect on the burning rate of pool fires, but it affected the ceiling temperature and prevented smoke back-layering towards the rainfall portal. The distribution of ceiling temperature towards the no-rainfall portal was not sensitive to rainfall and could be described by an empirical model.

Study on the maximum and longitudinal distribution of ceiling gas temperature in a naturally ventilated tunnel: The effect of longitudinal fire location

Ping Huang et al.

Summary: The study numerically investigates the maximum and longitudinal distributions of ceiling gas temperature. Factors such as fire locations, heat release rate, tunnel aspect ratio, and total length are considered. Results show that the flame tilts downstream due to the induced longitudinal flow inside the tunnel. The position of the maximum ceiling gas temperature shifts accordingly. An empirical equation is proposed to quantify the phenomenon and predict the trend. Additionally, asymmetric longitudinal distributions of temperature are observed, and corresponding correlations are proposed for different sides of the tunnel.

Effects of longitudinal wind and sidewall restriction on downstream radiative heat flux and temperature rise distribution in tunnel fires

Fangyi Guo et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the downstream radiative heat flux and temperature rise distribution of tunnel fires under the combined effects of longitudinal wind and sidewall restriction. The results show that under smaller ventilation velocity, the downstream radiative heat flux of sidewall fire is larger than that of centerline fire. As the ventilation velocity increases, the radiative heat flux of two fire locations both firstly increase and then decrease with increasing distance. The position of the peak radiative heat flux depends on the evolution of the flame drag and moves away from the fire center with increasing wind speed and heat release rate (HRR). A similar spatial distribution trend was observed for temperature rise with varying fire locations and wind speeds.

Physical modeling and machine learning of ceiling maximum temperature rise induced by tandem heat sources with unequal heat release rates in a natural ventilation tunnel

Lei Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of ceiling maximum temperature induced by adjacent heat sources with unequal fire heat release rates in a tunnel through physical modeling experiments and machine learning prediction. The results show that the ceiling maximum temperature gradually decreases with increasing separation distance between adjacent fires for a given total heat release rate. Additionally, the ceiling maximum temperature rise of the tunnel presents nonmonotonic changes with increasing ratio of the upstream fire heat release rate to the total heat release rate.

The effect of blockage and tunnel slope on smoke spread and ceiling temperature distribution in a natural-ventilated metro depot

Jiaqiang Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the coupling effect of blockage and tunnel slope on fire smoke spreading and ceiling temperature distribution in a metro depot with one closed end. It compared the fire plume behavior and ceiling temperature distribution in different slope situations and highlighted the impact of blockage on heat accumulation and fire burning rate. The coupling effect of blockage and tunnel slope was analyzed in relation to high temperature area at tunnel ceiling, and empirical correlations were proposed for temperature prediction.
