Study on small crack growth behavior of laser powder bed fused Ti6Al4V alloy

Liangliang Wu et al.

Summary: The behavior of small fatigue crack growth (FCG) in Ti6Al4V alloys produced by selective laser melting (SLM) was experimentally studied. It was found that the fatigue life was mainly consumed during the small FCG stage, and the FCG rate was greatly affected by microstructure in the early stage. However, as the crack length increased, the influence of microstructure decreased. Small cracks were found to still grow below the threshold value for long cracks, and the FCG rate of small cracks was higher than that of long cracks at the same stress intensity factor (SIF) ΔK. Therefore, the growth behavior of small cracks should be considered in predicting the fatigue life of SLM Ti6Al4V.

A unified prediction model for physically small crack and long crack growth based on modified CTOD

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: A unified model based on CTOD is proposed to calculate the growth rate of physically small crack (PSC) and long crack (LC). Experimental testing and theoretical derivation are used to establish a FCG model considering the small crack effect, and a theoretical equation for the transition crack length is provided. Several datasets of different materials are used for model validation.

Small fatigue crack propagation rate and behaviours in a powder metallurgy superalloy: Role of stress ratio and local microstructure

Qinzheng Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of stress ratio and local microstructure on small crack propagation in a superalloy using the Photomicroscopy method. The results show that crack growth rates are correlated with the stress ratio, and grain boundaries can temporarily arrest crack propagation.

Quantitative characterization of short fatigue crack and grain boundary interaction behavior in zirconium

Xiangkang Zeng et al.

Summary: The short fatigue crack growth behavior of zirconium was quantitatively investigated, and it was found that the cracks mainly propagated transgranularly and were sensitive to the crystallographic orientation. The cracks often deflected at grain boundaries and preferred to propagate along specific slip planes. A method for evaluating crack growth across grain boundaries was proposed.

Effect of twins and plastic-deformation anisotropy of extruded magnesium alloy on fatigue crack growth and crack closure behavior

K. Masuda et al.

Summary: The study revealed that twins and plastic deformation anisotropy have a significant impact on the fatigue crack growth behavior in extruded AZ31B magnesium alloys. Tensile twins generated under compressive load can increase the crack opening distance and accelerate the fatigue crack growth velocity. However, in the case of tensile load, the absence of tensile twins due to plastic deformation anisotropy prevents the acceleration of crack growth velocity.

Fatigue Crack Growth Behaviour and Role of Roughness-Induced Crack Closure in CP Ti: Stress Amplitude Dependence

Mansur Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fatigue crack propagation mechanism of CP Ti at various stress amplitudes and successfully calculated the roughness-induced crack closure (RICC) at different stages of crack propagation. The research found that lower RICC at higher stress amplitudes led to variation in crack growth rates in the studied conditions.

Short-Crack Growth Behavior in Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg Alloy

Robert K. Rhein et al.

Summary: The study focused on the high cycle fatigue behavior of an additively manufactured aluminum alloy, AlSi10Mg-T6, specifically examining the impact of process-related defects on fatigue life, initiation, and small crack propagation behavior. Ultrasonic fatigue methods were used to determine effective fatigue strength for lifetimes in the range of 10^8-10^9 cycles. X-ray CT imaging was utilized to detect crack initiation and growth during fatigue cycling, revealing slow crack growth rates and transgranular, non-crystallographic behavior in small cracks originating from surface defects.

Multi-stage dwell fatigue crack growth behaviors in a nickel-based superalloy at elevated temperature

Ji Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the multi-stage dwell fatigue crack growth (DFCG) behavior of Inconel 718 at high temperatures through a series of continuous and interrupted cyclic tests. The DFCG rates were measured and specific damage mechanisms were retrospect based on microstructural characterizations. Different sensitivities in dwell fatigue life were observed with varying dwell times, and sigma 3 twin boundaries (σ3 TBs) were identified as barriers to resist DFCG. Additionally, the main crack morphologies and local crack growth modes changed with the increase of dwell times, affecting the DFCG rates.

In-situ SEM investigation and modeling of small crack growth behavior of additively manufactured titanium alloy

Xinyan Wang et al.

Summary: The fatigue crack growth behavior of wire and arc additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloys was investigated using in-situ SEM fatigue testing. The study found that the crack growth rate is influenced by a synergy and competition among factors such as persistent slip bands, grain boundaries, and crack branching. A modified model based on CTOD was proposed to characterize the growth rate, resulting in improved prediction accuracy.
