A free volume-based analytical model for plastic flow in thin-walled silicon structures of lithium-ion batteries

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: Based on physically based constitutive models, this study investigates the plastic flow in thin-walled silicon anodes and obtains analytical solutions of stress fields. The results show that stresses and free volume decrease with the increase in charging and discharging, and the stress variations in thin-walled nanoparticles and nanotubes are similar. The study also suggests that circumferential surface cracks are likely to occur first due to the larger stress in the hoop direction. Furthermore, the resistance to plastic flow weakens with the increase in the charging rate.

Numerical calculation of lithiation-induced stress in a spherical electrode: Effect of lithiation-induced structural damage

Yong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of structural damage on stress evolution in electrode materials during electrochemical cycling of lithium-ion batteries. The results show that, without the contribution of concentration gradient, the stress exhibits an increasing-decreasing trend with the lithiation time. The maximum stress occurs at the surface (for potentiostatic operation) or inside (for galvanostatic operation) the electrode after the onset of lithiation.

Damage model for diffusion-induced structural degradation of metal-ion battery

Fuqian Yang

Summary: Understanding the structural durability and safety of metal-ion batteries is crucial for their application in electric vehicles. The study introduced an isotropic damage state variable in the deformation analysis of electrodes during electrochemical cycling, with implications on the evolution of the damage state and its impact on the electrode material. Additionally, the effect of structural damage on the bending of an electrode beam during the first insertion was analyzed, highlighting the reduction in the minimum radius of curvature due to structural damage/degradation.

Alleviating expansion-induced mechanical degradation in lithium-ion battery silicon anodes via morphological design

Sierra J. Gross et al.

Summary: This study examines the mechanics of volume expansion in films on curved substrates and its effect on the performance of various technologies. The research focuses on the volume expansion of silicon anodes for lithium-ion batteries and compares different backbone morphologies. The results show that the spinodal structure reduces stress and strain and delays yielding during expansion. This research highlights the significance of morphology on coatings undergoing volume variations and indicates the potential of spinodally derived materials for future battery electrode design.

Chemo-Mechanical Model of SEI Growth on Silicon Electrode Particles

Lars von Kolzenberg et al.

Summary: Silicon anodes in next-generation lithium-ion batteries offer high energy densities but suffer from shorter cycle life due to repeated fracture and healing of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the silicon surface. The interplay of chemical and mechanical effects in SEI on silicon electrodes causes complex aging behavior. A continuum model presented in this article includes chemical reactions, physical transport, and elastic deformation in the silicon particle model, while the SEI model comprises elastic and plastic deformation, fracture, and growth, aiming to better understand the battery aging process and improve battery life.

Shakedown, ratcheting and fatigue analysis of cathode coating in lithium-ion battery under steady charging-discharging process

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the cyclic plasticity behaviour of the LiNixMnyCozO2 electrode subjected to cyclic lithiation/delithiation under constant mechanical load. The shakedown, ratcheting, and fatigue analyses were performed using direct numerical techniques, while coin cell electrochemical experiments were conducted to support the analysis. The effects of coating thickness on shakedown and ratcheting response, as well as the strain-fatigue life curve to predict active coating life, were studied. The numerical results confirmed the presence of low cycle fatigue at the center and ratcheting mechanism at the edge of the cathode, consistent with experimental findings.
