Observations of non-linear stress effects on crack growth in interference fit fasteners

Jordan Carroll et al.

Summary: Interference fit fasteners are widely used in modern airframes to increase fatigue life. This paper emphasizes the importance of considering the separation effect in fatigue analysis of structures containing interference fit fasteners. Test results show a statistically significant acceleration in crack growth only found in specimens with interference fit fasteners. Ignoring these separation effects can lead to under-prediction of crack growth by a factor of two or more.

Corrosion effects on the fatigue performance of high-strength bolted friction connections

Chao Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the corrosion effects on the fatigue performance of friction connections through experimental and numerical analysis. The results show that corrosion significantly reduces the fatigue life of friction connections, with fatigue failure mostly occurring near the minimum cross-section plane of the inner plates.

Critical-load calculation method of bolt competitive failure under composite excitation

Long Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a competitive failure model of a bolt was established and a numerical calculation method was proposed to accurately predict the failure type and critical failure load of the bolt. Additionally, the influence of bolt structure parameters on the critical load ratio was investigated.

A unified evaluation method for fatigue resistance of riveted joints based on structural stress approach

Donglin Jia et al.

Summary: This paper presents a unified structural stress approach for evaluating the fatigue resistance of riveted joints for steel bridges. The approach was validated using data from fatigue tests on 114 specimens and large-scale riveted structures. The results showed that the approach is capable of evaluating different types of riveted joints and structural stresses, and is insensitive to changes in mesh size and element type in finite element analysis. The presented method is convenient for practical engineers to assess the fatigue resistance and life of riveted steel bridges.

Reassessment of fatigue detail categories of bolts and rods according to EC 3-1-9

Helen Bartsch et al.

Summary: The paper conducts a reevaluation of fatigue detail categories of bolts and rods in EC 3-1-9 based on published fatigue test data and investigations. A detailed database structure is established to evaluate fatigue test data in a differentiated way, leading to new design recommendations. The study confirms fatigue class 50 for bolts in tension and class 100 for bolts in shear, with additional insights provided on factors affecting fatigue strength.
