Fatigue crack growth modeling considering a hybrid propagation strategy

Edmundo R. Sergio et al.

Summary: Fatigue is caused by multiple damage mechanisms and their interactions, with cyclic plastic strain and damage accumulation at the crack tip being widely recognized as the main factors behind fatigue crack growth. In this study, authors propose a numerical model that predicts fatigue crack growth through a node release approach, allowing for various modeling possibilities of fatigue mechanisms. A hybrid propagation method is employed, where cumulative plastic strain and porous damage act as parallel propagation criteria. The model is validated using experimental data for the AA2024-T351 aluminum alloy, and interactions between plastic strain, porous damage, crack closure, and stress triaxiality are analyzed.

Fatigue crack propagation analysis in 2024-T351 aluminium alloy using nonlinear parameters

Summary: In this study, fatigue crack growth (FCG) in the 2024-T351 aluminium alloy was investigated using the plastic CTOD range, Delta op. Experimental tests demonstrated an increase in FCG rate with increasing stress ratio, indicating the presence of crack closure phenomenon. The plastic deformation near the crack tip can be quantified using either plastic CTOD or cumulative plastic strain.

Numerical implementation of a non-local GTN model for explicit FE simulation of ductile damage and fracture

Sondre Bergo et al.

Summary: This study presents the numerical implementation and initial applications of a non-local Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model for explicit finite element analysis, discussing the effect of the material characteristic length on ductile damage and fracture behavior and on the mesh sensitivity of the results. The study shows that simulation results obtained in all stages of the ductile fracture process are mesh independent for a certain mesh size ratio related to the material characteristic length when the non-local integral is evaluated on the current configuration.

Mechanisms of fatigue crack growth in Ti-6Al-4V alloy subjected to single overloads

D. M. Neto et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relative importance of crack closure and residual stresses on fatigue crack growth (FCG) by numerically predicting FCG in CT specimens of Ti-6Al-4V alloy subjected to single overloads. The results show that crack closure is responsible for the effect of overloads on FCG rate behavior, while residual stresses are not relevant for the material studied. The transient behavior obtained after overload is unattainable without considering the contact of the crack flanks.
