Wastewater treatment alters microbial colonization of microplastics

John J. Kelly et al.

Summary: Microplastics are retained in sludge in wastewater treatment plants, where they harbor diverse bacterial communities including those associated with bioflocculation. Effluent microplastics have higher abundances of bacteria linked to plastic breakdown and some potentially pathogenic taxa compared to influent microplastics. WWTPs can modify the microplastic-associated bacterial assemblages, potentially influencing the fate of microplastics in the environment.

Effect of dry sanitizing methods on Bacillus cereus biofilm

Andreia Miho Morishita Harada et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of different sanitation methods against Bacillus cereus biofilms, finding that 70% ethanol and commercial product had the lowest reduction on both surfaces, dry heat performed poorly on PP, while UV-C light and ozone achieved good reductions after 30 minutes. Sodium hypochlorite achieved similar reductions after 5 or 10 minutes. Further studies on the combination of dry methods are needed.

Effect of polymer type on the colonization of plastic pellets by marine bacteria

Josefine Hansen et al.

Summary: The study found that plastic is widespread in the oceans and serves as a surface for microbial biofilm formation. Different types of polymers can influence bacterial colonization, with some bacteria showing a preference for specific types of plastic. Additionally, known polymer and hydrocarbon degraders were found in plastic biofilms, indicating a potential role in plastic degradation.

Conditioning Film and Early Biofilm Succession on Plastic Surfaces

Christoph D. Rummel et al.

Summary: In the context of environmental plastic pollution, the emergence of plastisphere, a plastic-specific microbial community, is still under debate. The adsorption of dissolved organic matter to different polymer substrates is substrate-dependent, with UV-weathered polymers showing a preference for hydrophilic organic matter. The initial microbial colonization process shows substrate specificity for biofilm attachment, with communities ultimately converging after incubation.

Effects of biofilm colonization on the sinking of microplastics in three freshwater environments

Lingzhan Miao et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been frequently found in freshwater environments, raising concerns about their ecological effects, particularly the impact of biofilms on freshwater ecosystems. The colonization of microbes on microplastics alters their transport behavior, with biofouled microplastics showing increased sinking tendencies compared to pristine ones. This highlights the importance of studying how biofouling affects the sinking and distribution of microplastics in freshwater environments.
