Evaluation among trace elements, clinical parameters and type 1 diabetes according to sex: A new sight of auxiliary prediction in negative insulin auto-antibodies population

Jiatong Chai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the sex-specific levels of trace elements and the relationship between trace elements and clinical parameters in T1D patients. The results showed that lower levels of Mg, Ca, and Fe were found in female T1D patients, while higher levels of Fe, Zn, and Cu were found in male T1D patients. Predictive models combining clinical parameters and trace elements were constructed for male and female patients, which showed good clinical applicability.

Secular trend for increasing birthweight in offspring of pregnant women with type 1 diabetes: is improved placentation the reason?

Gernot Desoye et al.

Summary: Despite progress in blood glucose control, pregnancy in women with type 1 diabetes still poses risks for the fetus. Good glycemic control reduces the risk of fetal overgrowth, but hyperglycemia can still lead to fetal overnutrition and adiposity. Preventing fetal adiposity requires revised goal setting and continuous glucose monitoring.

High-resolution metabolomics of exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes in the Atlanta African American maternal-child cohort

Youran Tan et al.

Summary: Through an untargeted metabolome-wide association study, the metabolic perturbations and molecular mechanisms underlying the association between tobacco smoke exposure and adverse birth outcomes were identified in pregnant women, particularly focusing on 12 metabolic pathways associated with cotinine levels and adverse birth outcomes during both early and late pregnancy.

Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins

Peter Tsvetkov et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential cofactor for all organisms, but excessive copper can lead to cell death. We found that copper-dependent cell death mechanism is different from known mechanisms, and it is related to mitochondrial respiration. Copper directly binds to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, causing protein aggregation and loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.

Altered Metal Homeostasis Associates with Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, Impaired Glucose Metabolism, and Dyslipidemia in the Crosstalk between Childhood Obesity and Insulin Resistance

Alvaro Gonzalez-Dominguez et al.

Summary: Metals play an important role in childhood obesity and insulin resistance, with elevated copper levels, decreased content of certain plasma proteins, and the sequestration of copper, iron, and selenium in erythrocytes being the main abnormalities caused by obesity. These metal disturbances are usually worsened in children with concomitant insulin resistance and are associated with characteristic pathogenic events such as inflammation, oxidative stress, abnormal glucose metabolism, and dyslipidemia.

Reproductive Life Span and Severe Hypoglycemia Risk in Postmenopausal Women with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Soyeon Kang et al.

Summary: In postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes, a longer reproductive life span is associated with a lower risk of severe hypoglycemia, and every 5-year increment in the reproductive life span reduces the risk of severe hypoglycemia. The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is also associated with a lower risk of severe hypoglycemia.

Associations between serum copper, zinc, selenium level and sex hormones among 6-19 years old children and adolescents in NHANES 2013-2016

Lishun Xiao et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationships between copper, zinc, selenium and testosterone, estradiol, SHBG. The results showed that copper was inversely associated with testosterone and estradiol but positively correlated with SHBG; zinc had positive relationships with testosterone in male adolescents and female children but an inverse relationship with testosterone in female adolescents; with the rise of selenium level, testosterone and estradiol were increased but SHBG was decreased.

Prospective association of metal levels with gestational diabetes mellitus and glucose: A retrospective cohort study from South China

Zixing Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that higher concentrations of manganese and zinc, but lower concentrations of lead, calcium, and magnesium before 24 weeks of gestation were associated with increased risk of GDM and higher fasting plasma glucose levels among pregnant women. Monitoring metal concentrations within a certain range may help in early prediction of pregnancy glucose abnormalities.

Summary: The study assessed the associations between genetic loci influencing age at menarche and menopause and sentinel menopausal traits in various race/ethnic groups. It found significant associations in certain groups with reproductive lifespan, length of menopausal transition, and E2 levels, highlighting the impact of genetic factors on reproductive health outcomes.
